Has Victor Wanyama answered critics? Ben Davies responds

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies believes that teammate Victor Wanyma has answered his critics emphatically in his first season at White Hart Lane and is excited about what’s to come from the midfielder next term.

The Kenya international moved to North London from Southampton for a fee of approximately £11 million and was a key figure as Mauricio Pochettino’s side mounted an unlikely title challenge, finishing the campaign in second.

According to Davies, Wanyama has emphatically responded to any who doubted whether he had the all-right skills to cut it at White Hart Lane.

“Victor has been top-drawer, he’s a top player,” the Welsh international told Spurs’ official website. “I think some people perhaps had doubts about how good he was on the ball before he arrived here but I think he silenced everybody on that straight away.

“It’s not just his defensive work—on the ball he’s an excellent player and he’s been superb for us over the course of the last year.”

There were some doubts ahead of the campaign about whether Wanyama was being signed as a starter or whether he’d primarily deputise for Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli. However, he ended the campaign with 36 Premier League outings—of which 35 were starts—scoring four goals.

“We see what he can do in training quite regularly and you’re better off just not going near him if you want to keep the ball,” Davies added. “Hopefully there’s more of the same to come from him next season.”
