Former Ghana midfielder Abubakari Yakubu has passed on after a long battle with illness.
The 35-year-old died in hospital in his native country on Tuesday evening.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed the news with tweets on its official Twitter handle.
However, details of his illness remain unknown.
Yakubu made 16 appearances for the Black Stars, having represented Ghana at all age-groups from the U-17 upwards.
He was a member of the Black Stars at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt but fell short of making the final cut for the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany after playing in the qualifiers.
At club level, Yakubu is widely remembered for his time with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, for whom he play between 1999 and 2005.
He joined de Godenzonen as a 17-year-old and won Eredivisie titles in 2002 and 2004.
The defensive midfielder also played five times in the Champions League as Ajax reached the quarter-finals in 2002-03.
After five years at the Amsterdam Arena, Yakubu joined another Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem on loan before making the move permanent in 2005.
He spent five years with Vitesse.
Former Ajax manager Ronald Koeman and erstwhile teammates of the departed Tema-born have paid tributes on social media.
