Gabon aim to fire coach Jose Antonio Camacho after losing to Zambia

Gabon coach Jose Antonio Camacho is unlikely to have his contract renewed when it expires in November.

The former Real Madrid defender was appointed Gabon coach in December 2016 and oversaw the Panthers exit the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals at the group phase, with three draws.

According to French publication Lequipe, Gabon Sports Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze said that he communicated with the Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot), recommending that the coach be fired.

“I called Fegafoot (Gabonese Football Federation) this morning to signify that we do not accept the poor performance of the national team,” Bilie-By-Nze was quoted as saying by Lequipe.

“I asked for an interim solution because Mr Camacho has a contract until November. I asked that he be told that it will not be renewed.

“There are problems, we have to solve them, and if the coach is part of the problems, they must be resolved.”

The development comes after Gabon were held 1-1 at home by Burundi in a 2019 Afcon qualifier last Saturday, leaving them with just a point in the qualifiers after two games.

They were also beaten 1-0 by Zambia at home in Tuesday’s international friendly match.

Frenchman Alain Giresse is already being tipped for a return, eight years after leaving his post as Gabon coach. Gabon face South Sudan in back-to-back Afcon qualifying matches next month.
