Frimpong defends Lugarusic's tactics ahead of new season

Asante Kotoko captain Amos Frimpong has backed the club's decision to appoint Croatian Zdravko Lugarusic as new manager ahead of the new season which commences next weekend.

The former AFC Leopards coach replaced Michael Osei, who guided the club to fifth position last season. However, the new coach’s tactics were put under the microscope last week after their narrow win over King Faisal in a pre-season friendly.

Several players including Frimpong, were played out of position with the captain in a holding midfield role at a point, as opposed to his usual centre-back berth but the defender claims there shouldn't be any worries.

"If you are a professional player, you have to always be prepared to make yourself available for any coach who comes in. Whether you agree with the decision of the club's leadership or not, you are only there to play and work with whoever has been appointed," Frimpong told Success FM.

"Lugarusic has been given the mandate to lead the club and I think he is the right man so we all should rally our support behind him. Each player must also be prepared to take over a different role assigned to him since each coach has his tactics and how he wants his team to move during games.

"I believe we will be ready when the season kicks off although there have been several new additions. The dream is to win our first league title after three years and it's still achievable. I will urge the supporters to show commitment even if the results are not what they are expecting because with their support, it will be easy to return to winning ways just like how we did in the second half of last season," he added.

Kotoko will open their campaign with a home fixture against Liberty Professionals on February 12 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
