The result means that the PSL title is no longer in their hands despite sitting at the top of the standings with one match to go.
All is not lost for the Sea Robbers, but Saturday's draw away to Cape Town City may come back to haunt them, especially if Sundowns win against Golden Arrows next week Tuesday.
As things stand, Pirates are on 54 points from 29 league matches, and while they will have to beat Polokwane City by hook or crook next weekend, Sundowns could possibly spoil the party by winning their next two games.
What makes this title race interesting is the fact that Sundowns bowed out of the Caf Champions League after suffering a 2-1 aggregate loss to Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals.
Sundowns know that they will have to salvage their season by doing all they can to defend their PSL crown.
The fact that they are no longer going to win the Caf Champions League means that the league title is their only hope and that alone could spell bad news for the Sea Robbers.
Both sides have had a fantastic season both domestically and continentally, and they both deserve to win something.
However, there can only be one winner, and whoever doesn't win it, must just accept the defeat and plan better ahead of next season.
Perhaps it would have been better had either side won something earlier this season, but this is what makes football one of the most loved sporting codes across the globe.
Even in the Premier League, it's still not clear who will win the league title as both Liverpool and Manchester City are on each other's necks with just a few games to go before the end of the 2018/19 season.
Looking closely, both Liverpool and Manchester City have similarities to Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.
Just like Pirates, Liverpool have a rich history but they have not won trophies in a long time. They are both on the rise and play beautiful football.
Sundowns arguably have the best squad and the best coach in South Africa if not across all the continent just like Man City, and their financial muscles have contributed immensely in ensuring that they challenge for trophies on all fronts.
Another similarity is that both Pirates and Liverpool, have often been one game ahead of Sundowns and Man City respectively, who have had to play catch-up at all times in order to stay in the title race.
Nonetheless, all of the abovementioned teams have to fight for what they believe is rightfully theirs, and that is by winning their matches and getting over the finish line.
