Caf Confederation Cup wrap: Al Ittihad and Motema Pembe win big

Interestingly, after a goalless first half, Al Ittihad went on a rampage scoring eight goals inside 45 minutes to mark the biggest win of this Caf Confederations Cup preliminary round thus far.

Zubya was to fire in three more goals while Salem Elmslaty, Al Shadi Rabia, Abdulati Al Abasi and Moatassem Sabo weighed in with a goal each to complete the rout.

It would surely take something monumental for Miracle Club to overturn such an overwhelming deficit away from home.

Al Ittihad's win sends a warning shot to any opponent that they may face in future.

Also recording a big win on the day was DR Congolese side Daring Club Motema Pembe who thumped Anges de Fatima from Central African Republic 4-1 in Kinshasa.

Nigerian forward Peter Kolawole fired in a first half brace while Ghanaian Emmanuel Asante netted alongside Ricky Tulenge who converted from the penalty spot.

Motema Pembe will visit their opponents next week, and will be relieved knowing that they might not need to sweat too much in order to preserve their lead.

But it was not a good outing for another Congolese side Nyuki who fell 1-0 to Sudanese outfit Al Ahly Shendi.

Mujahid Farough’s goal on the half hour mark was all that was needed to decide the contest.

Elsewhere, Friday Samu and Steward Chikandiwa scored in the second half to hand Zambian army side Green Buffaloes a 2-0 win over Al Merreikh Juba at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Buffaloes could have won by a wider margin had they been more clinical in front of goal, especially in the first half where some good chances went begging.

But they travel to South Sudan for the second leg next week hoping to defend their two-goal advantage.

Meanwhile, the West African derby between Senegalese giants Generation Foot and Malian side Djoliba ended goalless.

Djoliba will host Generation Foot in Bamako next Tuesday cautious that they could be doomed by a scoring draw.

Another goalless draw was recorded in the contest between New Star and Vital’O of Burundi in a match played in Limbe, one of the cities that will host next year’s Afcon tournament in Cameroon.
