Betting: Clasico defeat leaves Julen Lopetegui on the brink at Real Madrid

Having lost 5-1 at Camp Nou, the bookmakers believe it's only a matter of time until Antonio Conte is brought in to replace the former Spain boss

A first meeting of the season with Barcelona was always going to be a pivotal clash for Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui.

Having started the campaign poorly, a positive result at Camp Nou may have restored some faith in the 52-year-old. Instead, the game looks to have had the opposite effect with his position looking untenable despite being in charge for just a few months.

Even without Lionel Messi, Barcelona were a class above their title rivals, romping to a 5-1 win and climbing back to the top of the table.

Madrid have now failed to win their last five league games, their worst run in the competition since May 2009. The result was also the first time that Real had conceded five goals in a game since November 2010 when Barca ran out 5-0 winners in another emphatic Clasico triumph.

The reigning European champions sit ninth in La Liga although bet365 are still offering 6/1 (7.0) that they're able to turn things around and win the title.

That makes them joint second favourites in the outright betting alongside city rivals Atletico. Diego Simeone’s side occupy fourth place, two points behind the Catalan giants in what has been an unpredictable start to the campaign.

Barcelona have showed plenty of weaknesses themselves so far - only winning six of their opening 10 matches in the competition - but they're an industry best 4/11 (1.36) to retain their domestic crown.

The Clasico defeat was a fifth of the season for Los Blancos and many bookmakers have suspended betting on potential replacements for Lopetegui.

One firm still offering prices are just 1/7 (1.14) about Antonio Conte taking over at the Bernabeu with reports that the former Chelsea manager is already in talks with the club after Sunday’s defeat.
