Barcelona icon Xavi nominated for Player of the Year award in Qatar

Xavi was no stranger to accolades at Barcelona and has continued the trend in Qatar. The playmaker is in line to receive the Player of the Year award for the Qatar Football Association (QFA) after a stellar performance in the 2016-17 season.

Al Sadd’s midfield maestro has been one of the most consistent players this campaign. The awards ceremony is due to take place on May 20 at the Qatar National Convention Center.
 
The 37-year-old midfielder been ever present in the Sadd starting eleven this season, playing on 26 occasions. He lifted his first piece of silverware In Qatar following the Wolves 2-1 win over El Jaish in the Qatar Cup final this year.
 
Unsurprisingly, the Spaniards passing stats are some of the best in the Qatar Stars League, boasting an 89.2% passing accuracy. Xavi’s passing often sets the tone for Al Sadd, so it’s understandable that he racks up an average of 75.4 passes per game, one of the highest figures in the league. 

Despite being in the twilight of his career, the Spanish World Cup winner still puts a good shift in as he covers an impressive 11.4 km per game.
 
Xavi could be set for a domestic trophy double with Al Sadd in the Emir Cup final.
