Exclusive: The Ghana midfielder has not been impressive for the Magpies this term but insists he will stay on to fight for a starting role

Newcastle United midfielder Christian Atsu has denied reports that he is planning a move away from St. James' Park in the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old has struggled for game time this season after falling down the pecking order behind Matt Ritchie and Kenedy, and whenever he is handed an opportunity by Rafael Benitez to play a part, he barely impresses the club's faithful.

Despite a likelihood of an influx of new players in January, as Newcastle hope to beat the drop by the end of the season, Atsu is adamant to the threat and still wants to stay on to prove his worth.

"I'm not looking for a move away from Newcastle United in January and to be honest, it has not even been part of my plans," Atsu told Goal.

"I rather want to stay here and improve on my performance because I'm very happy to play for Newcastle. It is a great honour for me to represent them.

"Although, the results haven't been good this season, I believe we will recover. We have the potential to change the storyline and just one win will change everything. We have one of the best coaches and he is also trying everything he can to get us back on track," he added.

Atsu has made just one start after five appearances, lasting 176 minutes on the field thus far this season.

Newcastle, who have dropped to the bottom of the Premier League, will face Southampton on Saturday.
