Ghana winger Christian Atsu has shed light on his prompt return to club action days after withdrawing from Ghana’s squad for games against Uganda and Saudi Arabia earlier this month.

Named to the final roster, the Newcastle United man was expected to captain the Black Stars in the 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Cranes on October 7 and the international friendly against the Green Falcons three days later – in the absence Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew and Harrison Afful.

The 25-year-old, however, pulled out of the games at the last minute due to injury, but was soon back in action as he started Newcastle’s Premier League clash at Southampton few days after Ghana’s friendly.

“I was getting treatment during the international break,” Atsu explained, as reported by Chronicle Live.

“After some time, I got better and was training with the team. I’m just back. I’m very happy playing for Newcastle.

“I want to improve each and every game. I want to score and to assist more.

“I know my level, so I need to keep working hard and try to help the team.”

In the league fixture, Atsu lasted for 82 minutes as the Magpies held the Saints to a 2-2 draw at St. Mary’s.

The Ghanaian has made eight topflight appearances for Rafael Benitez’s outfit this campaign, scoring in a 2-1 win over Stoke City last month.

He is expected to return to national duty when Ghana host Egypt on the final day of the World Cup qualifying on November 12.
