'Aguero is the best I played with' - Lampard salutes Man City striker

The ex-England international worked with some top forwards in his career but considers the main man at the Etihad Stadium to be a complete finisher

Frank Lampard says Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is “lethal” and the best finisher he played with during a distinguished career.

The former England international spent many years working with some fine attacking talent at Chelsea.

Aguero king of one thing Pep can't teach

He admits that Didier Drogba was a complete frontman, with the Ivorian offering a physical presence to go alongside his natural ability.

Aguero, though, set the standard in terms of goalscoring, according to Lampard, with a man who recently announced his retirement spending the 2015-16 campaign alongside the Argentine.

Frank Lampard on Sergio Aguero

He told Sky Sports: “I’ve been fortunate enough to play with great players.

“Didier Drogba I always rave about because he was an all round striker, gave you everything, but in terms of an out-and-out goalscorer and a finisher, Aguero is the best I played with.

Aguero still not clear on City future

“He can be quiet for a lot of the game and then he’ll score. He scores winning goals, he can score any kind of goal. Around the box he is lethal, he’s sharp. I like him.

“He’s a very confident lad. He has a way about him in his demeanour and how he trains every day, but he does produce and it’s great to see him producing.”

Aguero has not had it that easy at City this season, with his standing as the main man at the Etihad Stadium called into question.

UEFA Team of the Year Sergio Aguero

Pep Guardiola has overlooked him on occasion, but the South American has been in fine form of late – taking his goal tally for the season to 23 - and appears to have adapted his game to meet the demands of an expectant coach.

Lampard added: “I think we are all aware that Pep Guardiola likes to defend from the front. He’s very strong in his principles and he isn’t about to change now.

Guardiola shuts down Aguero questions

“With Aguero, it’s a tough one. By nature I don’t think he’s a centre forward to charge around and defensively give you loads, but Pep has set him a test now and said: ‘I need you to do that work for the team’.

“I think it’s improved him and now you’re seeing him be sharp. He’s hungry, so maybe he took that test on board.”
