West Ham United v Brighton & Hove Albion Live Commentary, 21/08/2022

0 - 2
A. Mac Allister (22 pen)
L. Trossard (66)
London Stadium

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
West Ham's start to the season goes from bad to worse, with three losses from three a far cry from a side hoping to compete for a place in Europe. Brighton, however, are in the European places, sitting fourth, and although it's early days, performances such as that one will have Seagulls fans across the South Coast dreaming of a European tour.
Mac Allister's goal from the spot sent Brighton on their way to victory, and the Argentine was electric in central midfield throughout. He completed more passes in both halves of the pitch than any other player, as well as having 81 touches and winning all of his four duels. Defensively, he completed two tackles and interceptions apiece, winning the ball 12 times in total. Superb.
The full-time whistle goes, with the home fans very, very unhappy with their side's performance in that 2-0 loss. They're right - West Ham were woeful at times, but they weren't given a moment's peace by Brighton's excellent press. The visitors were Seagull-like in their chasing of every loose ball, and Trossard's brilliant finish, off an even better pass from Gross, sealed the win that Brighton's impressive performance deserved.
K. Mitoma
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
90' + 3' Trossard has been a standout for Brighton, sealing the result with his well-taken finish, and he comes off for Kaoru Mitoma to play out the dying minutes.
90' + 1' We're into four minutes of added time, with Brighton coasting to victory as it stands. One West Ham goal would give things an almighty shake-up, though.
90' Good play from Mwepu keeps the ball alive in the Hammers' box, and Gross floats it up for Welbeck, but Fabianski rises to claim the high ball ahead of the Brighton striker.
89' Johnson passes up the line for Scamacca, but he's well covered by Dunk and the Brighton captain is able to cut out his return pass.
87' Rice looks to have secured possession in midfield for West Ham, but back comes Gross to steal the ball, before being brought to ground by the England man, and winning a clever free-kick.
E. Mwepu
S. March
Brighton & Hove Albion
85' March has excelled down the right for the Seagulls, but he'll come off now for Enock Mwepu to see out the game.
84' SAVED!!! The corner is whipped in, and this time it's Bowen who gets his head to it, hitting a powerful attempt towards goal before Sanchez tips it over the bar in similar fashion to the last!
83' SAVED!!! Johnson whips a cross into the box where Soucek is waiting, and the Hammers midfielder loops a header towards the top corner, but the ball is tipped over the bar by a diving Sanchez!
82' Mac Allister tries his luck from outside the West Ham box, but skies his effort well over the bar and into the stands behind the goal.
81' Brighton are playing with the freedom of Stratford at the moment, West Ham can hardly get near them and the Seagulls are in no rush to try a risky pass or leave themselves open at the back. It's been a controlled performance from start to finish, and barring a miraculous turnaround, will be taking three points back to the South Coast with them.
79' Brighton won their last two away Premier League games in London, vs Arsenal and Spurs in April), and are well on course for three consecutive away league wins in the capital for the first time since March 2001. Since the start of last season, the Seagulls are the only unbeaten away side in Premier League matches in London.
77' OVER!!! Brilliant play from Brighton sees Mac Allister put Estupinan into space down the byline. He crosses to the back post, where March is arriving late, but he can't direct his header on target and sends it over the bar!
B. Johnson
V. Coufal
West Ham United
75' Coufal is helped off by the club's physios following that injury, and Ben Johnson will take his place at right-back.
M. Lanzini
S. Benrahma
West Ham United
75' Benrahma has shown some positive moments, but not enough to stay on, and Manuel Lanzini replaces him.
M. Cornet
M. Antonio
West Ham United
74' Moyes does make changes, three to be exact, with Antonio withdrawn first for another new arrival in Maxwel Cornet.
73' Coufal's down receiving treatment inside his own box, giving both sets of players a chance of a rest in these hot conditions. No rest for David Moyes though, who is arranging as many substitutes as he can, in the hope of rescuing this two-goal defecit.
A. Cresswell
Yellow Card
West Ham United
71' Cresswell catches March late with a crunching tackle on the near touchline, and it's as clear a yellow card as possible for the West Ham left-back.
70' Scamacca, like Antonio, has been feeding off scraps since his introduction. West Ham's forward movement of the ball has been snail-esque, and certainly not the play of a side who finished so well last season.
68' Gross has now been involved in eight goals in nine Premier League appearances against West Ham United (three goals, five assists), his most against a single opponent!
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
66' That was some pass from Gross, who was clattered upon releasing the first-time ball, and it sent Trossard on his way towards doubling the Seagulls' lead at the London Stadium!
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
66' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! It's 2-0!!!! Brighton attack as quick as a flash and double their lead!!! Mac Allister's ball forward is flicked through by Gross, and Trossard surges onto it to slot the ball beyond Fabianski and into the back of the net!!! What a move from the Seagulls, and that might just secure all three points!
65' Since the start of last season, only Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have won more away Premier League points than Brighton (32), who have lost just four of their 20 games on the road, winning eight.
P. Estupiñán
A. Lallana
Brighton & Hove Albion
63' Graham Potter also makes a change, bringing off Lallana for recent signing Pervis Estupinan. He'll likely slot in at left-back, pushing Trossard further forward.
63' Scamacca's first action is to play Benrahma in behind the Brighton defence, but the offside flag is up against the Algerian, bringing the attack to an end.
G. Scamacca
Pablo Fornals
West Ham United
62' David Moyes needs to change something to improve West Ham's attacking output, and the first attempt at that sees Fornals come off for new signing Gianluca Scamacca.
60' March beats Benrahma down the left and scoots down the byline. He crosses towards the front post, but it's too close, as Fabianski is able to catch the cross with little difficulty.
58' SAVED!!! Forward come the Hammers, again through Antonio, who feeds Fornals to his right. He pulls the trigger from 20 yards, shooting low towards the far corner, but Sanchez gets down to save and hold the ball!
58' West Ham are yet to score in the Premier League this season, failing with 25 shots at goal from an expected goal tally of 2.8, including Rice's penalty against Forest. The Hammers haven’t failed to score in their opening three league games in a season since 1994-95.
56' Antonio powers into space down the right before crossing, but once again the final ball is a poor one, which Sanchez is able to catch with ease!
54' WIDE!!! West Ham work the ball well through Benrahma and Cresswell on the left. The latter crosses for Bowen coming into the box, but his effort takes another deflection to go wide!
53' BLOCKED AGAIN!!! Bowen's corner finds only Welbeck in defence, but his header away falls to Cresswell, and he smashes a half-volley towards goal that is blocked away by Webster!
52' BLOCKED!!! Bowen gets to a loose ball ahead of Webster and crosses to the back post. Benrahma brings it down, but his effort is blocked, and he tees up Rice to have another go, before his curling effort takes another deflection, going behind for a corner!
50' March looks to race in behind the defence, but he's clipped by Cresswell down the left side of the West Ham box, and wins a free-kick for the Seagulls.
49' CHANCE!!! Gross looks for Welbeck with a good throughball beyond Kehrer, but the West Ham debutant is able to win the ball cleanly this time, and recovers possession for the Hammers.
47' Cresswell's free-kick into the box causes chaos, with the ball bouncing all over the place and Benrahma very nearly creating shooting space for himself!
46' Antonio resumes proceedings for West Ham, and we're back underway in East London!
The sides are back out for the second half, with the home fans hoping for a massive improvement from West Ham in the next 45 minutes!
Trossard has been enigmatic in his left-wing-back role for the Seagulls, marauding up and down the touchline and providing the pass for the move that gained Brighton their penalty. He's also had three shots from just five touches inside the West Ham box, as well as completing nine passes in the final third and engaging in three duels. Bright.
Jeers ring around the London Stadium as West Ham go into the break 1-0 down, having been distinctly average in that half. The Hammers were woefully poor in attack, and although they looked dangerous on the break early on, they were caught on the counter by Brighton, leading to Kehrer bringing down Welbeck in the box. Mac Allister dispatched the following penalty, and Brighton's well-organised approach throughout means they are firmly deserving of their lead.
45' + 2' Soucek's long throw is allowed to bounce in the Brighton box, but Antonio can't get contact with it before Dunk heads it away from danger.
45' We're into two minutes of added time to close out the first half.
44' Coufal is put into space down the right and whips in a decent cross for Antonio, but Sanchez is there to catch the high ball, under pressure from the Jamaica striker.
42' West Ham have attempted nine crosses so far, but only two - one each from Fornals and Bowen, have actually found a claret and blue shirt. The Hammers need to really improve in the last third if they're to have any chance of saving this game.
40' BLOCKED!!! Trossard has the freedom of East London as he dribbles down the left, cutting inside and whipping a good shot towards goal, that is blocked away by the head of Zouma!
39' Soucek intercepts a pass out from the back and plays a clever one-two with Fornals on his way forward. But once again, the final pass to Antonio goes astray, and West Ham can't find a way through once again!
38' West Ham's clunky attack is really stunting them at the moment, with Antonio outnumbered by Brighton's back three, and the passes between him and his fellow forwards not sticking before the Seagulls arrive in droves to win back possession.
36' After West Ham can't capitalise on a promising-looking attack, Brighton race up the other end and Welbeck sends Trossard flying down the byline. He cuts the ball back for support to arrive, but it never does, and Cresswell clears for the Hammers!
34' Fornals sends a lofted pass Bowen's way, and the winger looks to find Antonio with the second ball befire the offside flag goes up against him, bringing the attack to an end.
32' It's been a scrappy affair in the final third, with the only shot on target so far being the one that opened the scoring. Otherwise, the two sides have had eight shots between them, with the vast majority been either blocked or landing far off target.
30' Coufal's reverse pass finds Bowen on the run in the box, but he can;t bring the ball under proper control before firing a wayward cross behind for a goal kick.
29' In Premier League history, only Aston Villa (160) have lost more home games than West Ham’s 159, with this the Hammers' 500th such game in the competition. They become the ninth team to reach 500 Premier League home games, with none of the previous eight losing this milestone match.
27' WIDE!!! Gross takes the next corner, resulting in a mini-game of head tennis in the box. It falls to Trossard, who smashes a well-weighted volley with his right foot, which dips just wide of Fabianski's left post!
26' BLOCKED!!! Zouma heads March's corner away from danger, but Caicedo picks it up and shoots from 25 yards! It's not the most threatening shot, but a deflection takes it wide of goal and behind for another corner!
25' A corner is whipped in towards Zouma at the back post, and he heads back across goal, but Sanchez climbs through the crowd to claim the high ball.
24' Trossard's in the thick of things down the left side as he looks to provide defensive cover, but eventually catches Coufal late to grant West Ham a free-kick.
A. Mac Allister
Penalty Goal
Brighton & Hove Albion
22' GOOOALLL!!! The Seagulls hit the front!!! Mac Allister's the man to step up, and he coolly dispatches the penalty, slotting into the bottom corner and sending Fabianski the wrong way! 1-0 to Brighton, who are now on course to secure an 11th game without defeat against West Ham!
T. Kehrer
Yellow Card
West Ham United
20' Kehrer is soon shown a yellow card for the foul by the referee, and he appears lucky that the card isn't a red one.
19' PENALTY!!!! Zouma comes forward with the ball, but is caught out with it and Trossard races away up the pitch. He puts Welbeck through down the left, and he's clipped by Kehrer on his way into the box, resulting in the referee pointing to the spot! A glorious chance for Brighton to take the lead, and the worst possible debut moment for West Ham's new signing!
17' It's been a cagey start to say the least, with neither side really able to open the other up and create a clear-cut chance. West Ham have looked dangerous on the break, but need to sharpen up in the final third. As do Brighton, who have looked blunt so far with the ball, allowing West Ham to catch them short at the back following mistimed attacking passes.
15' Brighton are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, only once having a longer unbeaten run in the top-flight, going eight without defeat in October and November 1981.
13' CHANCE!!!! A beauty of a first-time pass from Fornals sends Bowen streaking down the right. He squares for Antonio, but the striker misses it, and the ball back into him sees him touch it beyond Sanchez and behind before going down in the box!
11' An aerial ball to Welbeck is missed by the striker, but Trossard recovers it, smashing the ball low towards goal before it's blocked behind for a corner!
10' Brighton have never failed to score in 10 Premier League meetings with West Ham. However, they’ve only kept two clean sheets in these 10 games, and in none of the last seven.
8' Another good-looking Brighton attack is cut out and the Hammers look to counter again. They recycle possession quickly, but Coufal's cross into the box is blocked by Trossard for a throw-in.
6' West Ham have never won a Premier League game against Brighton from 10 attempts – it’s both the most they’ve ever faced an opponent without winning, and the opponent Brighton have faced most without defeat.
4' Fornals cuts out a Brighton pass and sends Antonio on the break down the left. He takes on Dunk and crosses to the far post, but Webster gets there first and heads back to Sanchez in the visitors' goal.
2' WIDE!!! Benrahma picks up a loose ball out wide, and cuts inside, heading for the box. He shoots from 25 yards, but his curling effort just misses the far post!
1' Brighton kick the game off, and we're underway at the London Stadium!
The teams head out onto the pitch, and kick-off is just moments away here!
Brighton’s XI remains unchanged from their opening two games, with Adam Lallana and top scorer Pascal Gross flanking Danny Welbeck up top. New signing Pervis Estupinan is on the bench.
West Ham’s shortage of centre-backs has been well documented at the start of this season, and their new signing from PSG, Thilo Kehrer, comes straight in to start. He replaces Ben Johnson, who drops to the bench, which also features Angelo Ogbonna returning from injury.
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION SUBS: Jason Steele, Tariq Lamptey, Levi Colwill, Enock Mwepu, Neal Maupay, Steven Alzate, Deniz Undav, Kaoru Mitoma, Pervis Estupinan.
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (3-4-3): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Lewis Dunk, Adam Webster; Solly March, Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard; Pascal Gross, Danny Welbeck, Adam Lallana.
WEST HAM SUBS: Alphonse Areola, Ben Johnson, Gianluca Scamacca, Manuel Lanzini, Flynn Downes, Maxwel Cornet, Angelo Ogbonna, Conor Coventry, Harrison Ashby.
WEST HAM (4-3-3): Lukasz Fabianski; Vladimir Coufal, Kurt Zouma, Thilo Kehrer, Aaron Cresswell; Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals; Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, Said Benrahma.
Brighton, meanwhile, have continued their good form in 2021-22 with a bright start to this campaign, beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford on the opening day before being held to goalless draw by a resilient Newcastle at the Amex.
After finishing seventh last season, it’s not been the start to 2022-23 that West Ham would have wanted. They’ve lost two from two so far and sit 19th in the table, however they were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Nottingham Forest last time out, having a plethora of goalscoring chances.
