Ayoze Perez is having to be dragged away from the officials as he continues his protests as to why the Magpies were not awarded a penalty. Benitez comes over to calm his compatriot.
Nottingham Forest advance to the third round of the EFL Cup after beating Newcastle in dramatic fashion. It was a deserved win for Karanka’s men as they created the better clear-cut opportunities.

90' + 7' BOOKING: Perez is shown a yellow for his protests after Newcastle's appeals for a penalty were turned down.
Gil Dias
Goal
Nottingham Forest
90' + 7' GOAL: Finished in style from Dias. Newcastle are hit on the break, Dias stays clam and finishes the job with an audacious lob from the 18-yard area. Game over now for Newcastle. Nottingham Forest 3 Newcastle United 1.
90' + 5' Penalty shout for Newcastle. Rondon goes tumbling to the ground as he and Steele collide going for a 50-50 ball. Newcastle players flail their arms in protest but nothing doing. Benitez is vexed by the decision and rightly so, Steele fails to make contact with the ball.
M. Cash
Goal
Nottingham Forest
90' + 4' GOAL: An instant reply from the hosts. Newcastle were on the brink of taking the game to penalties. Bridcutt sends a long ball towards Dias who does brilliantly to keep it in play. Murphy is the intended target but Darlow parries the ball into the path of Cash who tucks it home to put the home side within touching distance of the third round. Nottingham Forest 2 Newcastle United 1.
S. Rondón
Goal
Newcastle United
90' + 2' GOAL: An inspired substitution from Benitez. Rondon with a powerful finish into the far corner. Jacob Murphy and Perez play an integral part with a pair of slick passes. The former West Brom striker finishes with aplomb once inside the area. Nottingham Forest 1 Newcastle United 1.
Ayoze Pérez
Assist
Newcastle United
90' + 2' Assist Ayoze Pérez Gutiérrez
90' Hope for Newcastle yet as the fourth official indicates there will be at least six additional minutes. Karanka is furious on the touchline.
89' Delightful skill from Osborn. He tricks his way past two Newcastle defenders in the penalty area. Daryl Murphy wasn’t expecting the pass and can’t sort his feet out in time. Newcastle surround him, managing to clear the ball.
88' Another half chance for the visitors. Longstaff plays in Jacob Murphy who’s just inside the box. He tries to squeeze a cross in. The cross takes a deflection and ends in the safe hands of Luke Steele, who has been anonymous for most of the evening.
86' Newcastle are throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser. Jacob Murphy bursts down the left to get the visitors deep into the opposition half. The lack of cutting edge is obvious, however, as the attack flames out.
J. Robinson
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
83' BOOKING: Jack Robinson is the latest player to incur the referee’s wrath as he becomes the fifth player to enter the book.
M. Cash
João Carvalho
Nottingham Forest
82' Substitution: João Carvalho off, Matty Cash on. Carvalho takes his place on the bench. The former Benfica man showed flashes of pure class tonight and his performance is saluted with warm applause from the home fans.
S. Rondón
Joselu
Newcastle United
82' Substitution: Joselu off, Salomón Rondón on. Rondon is Benitez’s final change as he rolls the dice for the final time.
S. Longstaff
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
80' BOOKING: Sean Longstaff. There’s tension entering the final ten minutes. Newcastle starting to get frustrated and now Longstaff is shown a yellow for slinging Jack Robinson to the ground.
78' Will Nottingham rue these missed opportunities? Dias again misses the target after great work from Daryl Murphy. This time Dias lashes the ball high and wide. They could, and perhaps should, be out of sight.
Jacob Murphy
Y. Muto
Newcastle United
77' Substitution: Yoshinori Muto off, Jacob Murphy on. Muto departs after a frustrating evening.
Joselu
Yellow Card
Newcastle United
76' BOOKING: Joselu. The Spaniard is also in the book for his reaction to Hefele's tackle.
M. Hefele
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
76' BOOKING: Michael Hefele. A small shoving match breaks out between Joselu and Hefele. The Newcastle forward isn’t happy with a hefty challenge the former Huddersfield defender puts on him and small pushes are exchanged. Both go into the book as a result.
73' Chance for Nottingham Forest. Dias spins away from two tacklers and runs at the heart of the Newcastle defence. Murphy is screaming for the pass to be played in, the Portugal midfielder goes for goal himself instead. His effort soars over the crossbar.
71' Newcastle trying a more direct approach in search of a goal. Kenedy hits a long ball towards Joselu. He flicks it on to Muto and the Japan striker works his way into the penalty area but can’t work Steele in the Nottingham goal. Forest still lead 1-0.
Ayoze Pérez
F. Fernández
Newcastle United
69' Substitution: Federico Fernández off, Ayoze Pérez on. An attacking change from Benitez. The Newcastle manager sends on Perez at the expense of Fernandez. Kenedy has dropped into the wing-back position with Clark going into central defence.
Gil Dias
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
67' BOOKING: The first yellow card of the evening is brandished in the direction of Dias. The former Monaco man goes in heavily on Clark and is the first name in Mr. Simpson’s book.
66' Another lightning-fast attack from Nottingham. Muto is robbed of possession and Bridcutt releases Dias down the right. The latter’s touch is too heavy, and the chance is gone.
65' Newcastle’s tempo has slowed. Benitez’s side are making it easy for the hosts with a real lack of penetration between the lines.
63' Forest pressure is mounting and The City Ground is buzzing as the home side are starting to assert themselves once more.
61' What an effort from Carvalho and what a save from Darlow in the Newcastle goal. Brilliant play from Osborn, he slips in the Portuguese and he tries an outrageous lob from inside the penalty area. Darlow claws the ball away to keep the deficit to just one.
B. Osborn
J. Lolley
Nottingham Forest
58' Substitution: Joe Lolley off, Ben Osborn on. Another premature end to the night for a Nottingham Forest player.
58' May have spoken too soon. Lolley is on the deck and holding his knee. He is in obvious pain and will be withdrawn. Another huge blow after losing Sam Byram in the first half.
55' Joe Lolley looks to be moving with discomfort. Karanka checks in on the midfielder who has been outstanding so far. He seems fine to continue.
53' Decent effort by Longstaff. The Geordie-born midfielder gets the ball out of his feet and lets fly from 25-yards. The effort is certainly on target, unfortunately it hits Joselu on the way and heads over the crossbar.
51' Michael Hefele meets the resulting corner but the ball flies over the bar. The second half has got off to a blistering start.
50' HUGE BLOCK by Fernandez. Poor header from Clark gifts possession to Carvalho. He puts in a cross for Murphy who has two bites at the cherry before Fernandez slides in and gives away a corner. The goal was gaping for Murphy.
48' Big chance for Newcastle but in the end the offside flag is up. Atsu puts in a quality delivery and Joselu rises highest to meet the cross. Steele beats the ball away. That will be encouraging for the away side even if the flag went up.
47' Newcastle much snappier in their passing in the early stages of the second half. Not everything paying off but the effort to up the tempo is deliberate.
45' Nottingham begin the second half. Can they extend their lead, or will Newcastle grab a leveller?
Nottingham Forest lead thanks to a former Newcastle man, Daryl Murphy headed the hosts in front with just two minutes on the clock. The visitors have grown into the game and had chances to level before the break. Rafa Benitez has plenty to fix at half time. Nottingham Forest 1 Newcastle United 0.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1 NEWCASTLE UNITED 0.
45' The fourth official has indicated there will be two minutes of added time.
44' Carvalho curls in a free-kick from the right for the hosts. The ball is dealt with effectively enough before Lolley nips in to claim a 50-50 ball. He earns another dangerous free-kick for his team. The delivery is poor, however, and cleared by the visitors.
41' Muto shows a good turn of pace to get in behind the Forest defence down the left. The Japanese international believes he is clipped as he entered the box but doesn’t convince the referee.
T. Darikwa
S. Byram
Nottingham Forest
39' Substitution: Sam Byram off, Tendayi Darikwa on. Byram valiantly tried to carry on, but his night is cut short. The home fans give him a warm applause as he leaves the field.
36' Great chance for Newcastle to equalise. A corner comes in and Muto flicks the ball on, it flashes across the six-yard area with Fernandez lunging to make any kind of contact. Their best chance of the match so far. Still Nottingham lead 1-0.
35' Great tackle by Byram, though he may have paid for it as he lays on the ground holding his knee. Longstaff bursts forward for Newcastle and looked set to pull the trigger on a cross into the box before the former Leeds product intervened.
34' Ciaran Clark makes an excellent full-blooded tackle to halt Byram in his tracks, otherwise Forest were in again. Benitez must address the problem on that side lest they be punished further.
31' The visitors are having to work hard for their chances. Karanka’s side are very organised, swarming around the ball when it’s in their final third.
29' Big chance for the home side to double their lead. Kenedy is caught in possession deep inside his own half. Carvalho picks up the loose ball and exchanges clever passes with Dias and Byram. Byram’s cross is overhit in the end and Newcastle are let off the hook.
27' Murphy is causing Newcastle problems again. The striker bulldozes his way into the box and fends off Fernandez. The Argentine recovers and plays the ball out for a corner.
24' Benitez is on the touchline barking orders at his players. His side have slowly got to grips with the game but their play inside the final third is still lacking some cutting edge.
22' The visitors are probing more purposefully now. Atsu plays a clever pass and is on the move for the return ball. Joselu takes a shot from an acute angle and earns a corner for his side.
19' Brilliant run from Lolley. The former Huddersfield Town man weaves his way past three would be tacklers and drives towards the penalty area. The 26-year-old is then brought down outside the area, but Mr. Simpson waves play on. Great work from Lolley.
17' Lovely, slick football from Forest. Lolley starts the move with quick feet to get away from a pair of black and white shirts. The ball is worked out wide before a return pass finds Lolley in the penalty area. The midfielder earns a corner for his endeavours.
15' A quarter of an hour has passed and Karanka will be delighted with the start his side have made. Benitez looks irritated in the Newcastle dugout, but will no doubt be pleased with how his side have responded in the last five minutes.
12' Smart move from Newcastle. Kenedy collects the ball out on the left and fizzes in a pass which Atsu flicks on for Ki. The South Korean international can’t find the net on this occasion, although the approach play is improving.
11' Nottingham aren’t giving their Premier League opponents a moments rest as they harass Newcastle and regain possession to spring another attack. Unfortunately, this time, the final ball isn’t quite good enough.
9' The visitors get their first bit of sustained possession. They work the ball from back to front before a disappointing cross ends the attack.
7' Aitor Karanka will be very pleased with how his side have started. Once more they are camped in the Newcastle half. Benitez can only look on in contemplation.
5' Newcastle are chasing shadows in the opening exchanges. Forest recycling the ball well and Byram sends in another teasing cross which is dealt with this time by the Magpies back line.

2' Assist Sam Byram. A delicious cross whipped in by the former West Ham United man.

2' GOAL: It’s a fast start for the hosts as former Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy flicks a header past Darlow. Sam Byram drives down the right and hooks in a pinpoint cross for Murphy to meet. Nottingham Forest 1 Newcastle 0.
1' KICK-OFF: Referee Jeremy Simpson gets us underway at The City Ground. Newcastle get the ball rolling for the first half.
Midfielder Sean Longstaff will make his competitive debut for the Magpies this evening. Meanwhile, Japanese forward Yoshinori Muto makes his first start for the club.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has a poor record in EFL Cup away games. The Spaniard has won just two of his last seven, the last of those coming in 2012 when he was managing Chelsea.
However, the last time the sides squared off at The City Ground Newcastle were the victors. Fabricio Coloccini scored a 120th minute winner in a 4-3 goal-fest.
