Manchester United v West Ham United Live Commentary, 30/10/2022

1 - 0
M. Rashford (38)
Old Trafford

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game, and we'll see you for the next one!
That slender victory lifts Manchester United up one place in the table to fifth, above Chelsea. They're just a point from fourth, and have a game in hand over both Newcastle and Tottenham above them. The Hammers, meanwhile, suffer their seventh defeat of the season, and are 13th, five points above the bottom three heading into their next game with Crystal Palace.
Rashford's first-half header proved to be the only difference between the two sides, and the England forward continued to be the hosts' most dangerous attacking threat in the second half. He finished the game with two shots on target from five attempts, and touched the ball eight times in the box. He completed one key pass and contested nine duels, and also helped out defensively by winning possession four times, more than anyone else in the Red Devils' forward line.
It's all over, and the Red Devils hold on to win this game by the skin of their teeth! As with the first half, chances were few and far between in the second, with Manchester United doing very little to add to their lead, and West Ham piled on the pressure late on in their bid to find an equaliser. De Gea and the United defence were superb though and let nothing through, with the goalkeeper making several excellent saves to ensure the hosts' victory!
90' + 3' SAVED!!! What a stop!!! The Hammers pile forward and Benrahma is tackled by Maguire on the edge of the box, but the loose ball is smashed towards goal by Rice, with his thumping effort tipped wide by a stretching De Gea!
90' + 3' BLOCKED!!! Fornals bursts past Fernandes and races into the box. He cuts it back for Bowen, whose first-time effort is heading for goal, until it's blocked by Maguire and cleared by Dalot!
90' + 1' A clever pass down the right flank from Kehrer finds Bowen on the fly, and although Martinez slides in to challenge for the ball, he can't prevent Manchester United conceding the late corner!
90' + 1' We're into three minutes of added time to close out this game at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes
Yellow Card
Manchester United
90' Bowen drifts inside from the right and looks for options through the middle. He finds none, so chooses to run towards the box himself, but is stopped in his tracks by Fernandes, who clips him late and is booked as a result.
88' Rice shoots from the left-edge of the box after bypassing Casemiro, but the Brazilian recovers to block it behind for a corner!
86' OFF THE POST!!! McTominay's cross in the box finds Fred, whose header bounces low and beyond Areola, but cannons back off the right-hand post and out!
84' SAVED!!! Cresswell's cross is met by the head of Zouma, who glances the ball towards goal. It looks like it's in for all money, but De Gea dives across to claw it out of the goalmouth to rescue the hosts once more!
82' SAVED!!! Antonio beats McTominay in midfield and drives forward before smashing a shot on goal, and it requires a fingertip save from De Gea to tip it over!
82' Fornals whips an inviting cross to the back post, and Antonio looks to nod it in, but Dalot gets there once more and heads clear for the hosts!
81' A loose touch from Casemiro gives Soucek space to shoot from the edge of the box, but his effort is headed away from danger by Maguire.
C. Eriksen
Manchester United
79' Eriksen comes off having seen his creativity fade somewhat in the second half, and Fred will come on for the hosts to see out this game.
T. Kehrer
Yellow Card
West Ham United
78' Rashford knocks the ball beyond Kehrer and chases hard to spark the counter-attack, but he's held back by the Hammers' right-back, who is shown a yellow card for that tactical foul.
78' CHANCE!!! Rice whips in a free-kick for West Ham, and a glancing header sends the ball goalwards. Dawson attacks it at the back post, but Martinez gets in front of him to head away from the goalmouth!
Pablo Fornals
F. Downes
West Ham United
77' Downes is next off for West Ham, and Pablo Fornals is on, to hopefully add some more attacking verve to the number 10 position.
76' Manchester United have had 65.9 per cent of the ball over the last 15 minutes, but have been able to do little with it. That's a credit to West Ham's defence, but the hosts' creativity in the final third has been sorely lacking so far.
74' Ronaldo cuts inside and pulls the trigger from the edge of the box, but Dawson gets in the way to block the shot for West Ham.
T. Souček
Yellow Card
West Ham United
72' Shaw looks to beat Soucek down the left, but is body-checked and brought to ground by the West Ham midfielder, who is booked by the referee.
71' Ronaldo has attempted 5 shots in this game, the first time he has attempted at least this many in a Premier League match since Manchester United's 4-0 loss to Brentford.
69' SAVED!!! Benrahma cuts inside on his way forward and bypasses Casemiro before shooting. It's a good effort which swerves on its way to goal, but De Gea is still able to hold the shot!
68' OVER!!! Antonio wins the ball 40 yards from goal and powers forward. He tees up Dawson, who tries his luck from the edge of the box and sends a decent effort just over De Gea's crossbar!
66' West Ham come forward through Kehrer, who drives down the right. He whips a cross into the box with support arriving, but Dalot heads it behind for a corner to the Hammers.
64' OVER!!! Casemiro finds McTominay on the edge of the box, who in turn lays it off to Ronaldo. He blasts an effort from 20 yards, but sends the ball looping just over the crossbar!
62' WIDE!!! Rashford bursts forward and feeds Ronaldo in the box, but the striker's first-time effort on his left foot is skewed wide of the near post!
62' Shaw crosses for Ronaldo, who rises high to head the ball towards goal, but his glancing effort skids off his forehead and flies well wide of the target!
S. McTominay
A. Elanga
Manchester United
61' Elanga comes off in Manchester United's first change, and Scott McTominay will come into the centre of midfield for the hosts.
59' Forward come the hosts as Casemiro breaks and once again looks to find Ronaldo, but his cross is cut out by an unorthodox block by Zouma, who clears for West Ham!
58' Bowen's cross to the back post has three West Ham players waiting for it, but the ball is hooked clear thanks to a fantastic defensive header from Dalot!
M. Antonio
G. Scamacca
West Ham United
57' The booked Scamacca comes off for West Ham, and the Italian is replaced up front by Michail Antonio early in this second half.
55' Manchester United are yet to drop a point from winning half-time positions so far this season, having seen out the victory in all four such games in 2022-23.
53' Bowen knocks a loose ball beyond Shaw, but is taken out by the left-back as he attempts to continue his run and wins a free-kick.
51' WIDE!!! Rashford cuts inside Kehrer before firing a shot goalwards, but whips his effort just wide of the far post!
50' BLOCKED!!! Benrahma ghosts in behind Dalot and cuts the ball back for Scamacca in the box. His first-time shot is well blocked by Martinez, and the West Ham striker tries to volley the rebound, but catches Martinez in the face with a flying high boot!
48' West Ham have lost more away Premier League matches against Manchester United than they have versus any other side (21), while the Red Devils have only won more home games against Spurs (24).
46' Fernandes kicks off for the hosts, and we're back underway at Old Trafford!
A. Aréola
Ł. Fabiański
West Ham United
46' One half-time change for the Hammers, with goalkeeper Fabianski coming off for Alphonse Areola. The Polish international took a slight head knock in the first half, suggesting the substitution was a cautionary one.
The teams return for the second half, and can West Ham produce something to turn this game around in the next 45 minutes?
Eriksen's sumptuous ball into the box saw Rashford head home, and the deep-lying Dane has pulled the midfield strings better than anyone else so far. He's completed two key passes including that assist, as well as finding his target with two crosses. He's completed 35 passes inside West Ham's half, as well as making 17 entries in the final third. He's won possession eight times, but has lost the ball on 12 occasions, showing how tight a contest it's been in the middle of the park.
Rashford's goal gives the hosts the lead at the interval, following a first half that has been very sparse of chances! Both sides have struggled to break their opponents down, owing to a pair of highly organised defences, and have seen most of their chances coming on the counter-attack though. Rashford arrived in the right place, at the right time though, heading the Red Devils in front and scoring his 100th Manchester United goal in the process!
45' + 1' We're into a minute of added time at the end of this first half.
45' Fernandes whips a cross towards the front post with Ronaldo arriving, but the swirling ball evades the striker and Fabianski gathers it.
44' A cross-field pass from Fernandes is right on the money as it finds Shaw, but West Ham's cover defence is ample and the hosts can't pick out a more incisive pass.
42' It's not exactly been the most electrifying of games, with very few chances of note at either end. The hope was that Rashford's goal might spark it into life, but play has continued to be slow, and dominated by the battle in midfield.
40' That goal is Rashford's 100th for the Red Devils in all competitions, and it's his fourth in 13 appearances against West Ham.
C. Eriksen
Manchester United
38' The ball in from Eriksen was near-perfect for Rashford to run onto, and the England forward made no mistake in finishing the chance off!
M. Rashford
Manchester United
38' GOOOAAAALLL!!! There it is!!! The hosts finally create a clear-cut chance, and Rashford is on hand to bury it!! Eriksen and Fernandes play a neat one-two on the edge of the box, and the former whips a peach of a cross into the back post. Rashford attacks the ball at pace to smash a header beyond Fabianski, and the ball nestles in the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Manchester United!
G. Scamacca
Yellow Card
West Ham United
36' Rashford steps away from Scamacca near the far corner flag, but is clipped late by the West Ham striker, who is shown the game's first yellow card.
34' Fernandes has created more chances than any other Manchester United player in the Premier League this season (28), while only Marcus Rashford (25) has had more shots than the Portuguese (23). However, Fernandes has only faced Chelsea (six times) more often without scoring in the Premier League than he has West Ham (five).
32' Martinez breaks up a West Ham attack and feeds Ronaldo, who is in space. He looks to pass for Fernandes to his right, but it's a woeful ball and dribbles back into the possession of West Ham and Zouma!
30' Soucek plays a good pass through to Bowen down the right, but Martinez slides in with a well-timed challenge to knock the ball away for the hosts.
28' West Ham manager David Moyes has never won away against Manchester United in the Premier League, drawing four and losing 11 of his 15 visits. His sides have scored just 10 goals across these 15 visits, with 40 per cent of those coming in a single 4-4 draw between the Red Devils and his Everton side in April 2012.
26' SAVED!!! Kehrer steps inside on the edge of the box and shapes to shoot before feeding Bowen, whose first-time shot is parried by De Gea!
26' Cresswell's reverse pass puts Benrahma into space once more, but De Gea races out of his box to clear the loose ball before the Algerian can latch onto it!
24' Benrahma is put through once again on the counter for West Ham, and takes on Martinez once more. He refrains from shooting though, instead knocking the ball into the centre-back and winning a corner in the process.
23' Soucek is caught out and the Red Devils flood forward again. The Hammers are able to recover though, and Fernandes eventually resorts to a speculative shot from distance, which Rice gets in the way of.
21' West Ham have kept just two clean sheets in their last 17 Premier League away games, and have won just two of their last 14 on the road, losing 10.
19' Ronaldo and Fernandes link up to create another chance for the hosts, but West Ham have numbers in defence and force Ronaldo into a cross from the byline, which deflects off Bowen to go behind for a corner.
17' West Ham come forward and Benrahma spins away from Casemiro before shooting. It's blocked and comes back to Scamacca, who tries his luck from similar distance, but Maguire gets in the way.
16' SAVED!!! Dalot whips a cross into the area and Rashford meets it with a bullet header, but his goalbound effort is stopped and held thanks to fantastic reactions from Fabianski!
15' BLOCKED!!! Dawson's woeful pass to Kehrer is cut out by Rashford, who strides forward before cutting inside. He shoots from just inside the box, but a good block from Soucek sends the ball looping over and onto the roof of the net!
15' SAVED!!! Benrahma loses out to Casemiro in midfield, and he feeds Ronaldo in space. The forward tries his luck from 25 yards, but his swerving effort is held by Fabianski!
14' Manchester United have lost just one of their last 14 home games in the league, having lost six of their previous 13 at Old Trafford before this. They're looking to keep three consecutive home clean sheets for the first time since a run of four in June 2020.
12' The hosts have options queuing up in the box as the ball comes to Eriksen on the edge of the area, but his aerial pass to Shaw is headed away well by Kehrer for the Hammers.
10' Martinez and Bowen tussle for the ball in the far corner, but the Manchester United defender is able to shepherd the ball over the sideline and behind for a goal kick.
8' Manchester United have won their last four Premier League matches against West Ham, their best winning run against the Hammers since an eight-game run between 2008 and 2012.
7' Eriksen's pass from inside his own half finds Elanga on the run, and the winger cuts across Zouma before shooting, but can only roll it wide of Fabianski's left post!
5' West Ham have picked up just three points in their last 14 Premier League visits to Man Utd, with their last win there coming in May 2007 thanks to a Carlos Tevez winner.
4' Dalot drills an early cross into the box from the touchline, but Rashford, arriving late, can only drag it wide with a first-time shot!
2' West Ham break and Scamacca puts Benrahma into a yawning hole between the Manchester United defence. He advances towards the box and steps inside before shooting, but Martinez gets in the way for the home side!
1' Downes kicks off for West Ham, and we're underway at the Theatre of Dreams!
The teams head out onto the Old Trafford pitch, and we're not far away from kick-off now!
Only one change is made to the West Ham team which beat Bournemouth last time out, as Craig Dawson comes in for Ben Johnson in defence. The Hammers youngster drops to the bench, and Thilo Kehrer moves to right-back in his place.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are both back in the XI for Manchester United, having been used sparingly in Premier League games so far this season. They replace Raphael Varane and Antony respectively at the front and back of the team, both of whom are absent from the squad through injury.
WEST HAM SUBS: Alphonse Areola, Ben Johnson, Vladimir Coufal, Pablo Fornals, Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini, Angelo Ogbonna, Conor Coventry, Emerson Palmieri.
WEST HAM (4-2-3-1): Lukasz Fabianski; Thilo Kehrer, Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice; Jarrod Bowen, Flynn Downes, Said Benrahma; Gianluca Scamacca.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Nathan Bishop, Martin Dubravka, Tyrell Malacia, Fred, Jadon Sancho, Facundo Pellistri, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho.

The Hammers have recovered from their very poor start to the season in recent weeks, winning three of their last five games after losing five of their first seven. They beat Bournemouth 2-0 in London last time out, but have won just five points from 18 available in away games during this campaign.
The sixth-placed hosts have at least one game in hand over all the sides above them, and could rise to fifth with a win in this game. The Red Devils are on a four-match unbeaten streak since losing 6-3 to neighbours Manchester City at the beginning of October.
