United can celebrate their first win of the season then, and will believe they can kick on from here. Liverpool have some thinking to do. That's all for now. Goodbye!
United's victory lifts them to 14th in the early Premier League table, two places above Liverpool who remain winless. This is their first Premier League victory against Liverpool since March 2018, and while it's just one game, it's a start. Liverpool aren't having trouble finding the net – they've scored in each of their last 22 Premier League games now – but their recent defending will give Klopp cause for concern. They won't win trophies this way.
United have achieved liftoff under Erik ten Hag! The Red Devils have recovered from a woeful performance last week to edge past an out-of-sorts Liverpool. Sancho's first-half strike gave United confidence before Rashford doubled their advantage. Salah gave Liverpool hope, but United held off the visitors' late rally to seal the three points.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 LIVERPOOL
90' + 4' Fernandes tries to pick out Ronaldo with an over-the-top pass. It doesn't work out, but Diaz fouls the United midfielder in his haste to win the ball. United take the free-kick, and the referee blows the final whistle!
90' + 3' United earn a corner down their right and wisely keep it near the corner flag. They've had Liverpool's number all game.
90' + 1' Liverpool are lucky not to go 3-0 down, as Martial's slipped through on goal but elects to pass to Van de Beek instead, allowing Alisson to intercept. United have caught the visitors out way too often at the back.
90' Ronaldo spanks the ball high and wide from the edge of the box. Klopp is unhappy to see the officials indicate only five minutes of added time.
88' Ronaldo's not been on long but goes down with cramp. United don't mind waiting for him to get up, as it eats up a few valuable seconds for Liverpool.
D. van de Beek
C. Eriksen
Manchester United
86' Eriksen is United's final departure. Van de Beek comes on for the Dane.
Cristiano Ronaldo
M. Rashford
Manchester United
86' Rashford's game is over too. He's had a fine one for United. Ronaldo gets a runout up front.
A. Wan-Bissaka
Diogo Dalot
Manchester United
86' United make three changes of their own. Wan-Bissaka takes Dalot's place at right-back first.
K. Tsimikas
A. Robertson
Liverpool
85' Liverpool make a late change. On comes Tsimikas for Robertson at left-back.
84' De Gea punches the corner away. Alexander-Arnold goes for goal from range. He fires wide and lets United off the hook for now.
83' Eriksen fires over from outside the box, but Liverpool suddenly have belief. Salah's good turn almost, but not quite, deceives Malacia. The visitors settle for another corner.
Mohamed Salah
Goal
Liverpool
81' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 LIVERPOOL! Salah scores to give Liverpool hope! United fail to deal with Alexander-Arnold's latest corner, and De Gea saves Carvalho's rasping drive. The ball pops up for Salah who beats the United keeper with a low header at his near post.
80' Chance for Liverpool! Alexander-Arnold's latest cross causes United a few problems and Robertson salvages it at the far post. The Scot centres the ball for Firmino, whose shot is clawed away by De Gea! It'll be another Liverpool corner.
78' Liverpool earn another corner down their right as Carvalho's shot is blocked. Firmino nods Alexander-Arnold's looping corner through to De Gea in the United goal.
77' Martinez receives some brief treatment for cramp after ending another Liverpool attack. The Argentine's not put a foot wrong in this game.
76' Rashford looks a player revitalised here. The Englishman skips inside past three Liverpool tackles to lash over the crossbar from distance.
Bruno Fernandes
Yellow Card
Manchester United
74' Fernandes gets booked for a blatant dive in response to a challenge from Robertson in the box. It's a shame, as the United midfielder had done some great work to take the Scot on.
Fábio Carvalho
J. Milner
Liverpool
73' Liverpool substitution. Milner makes way for the 19-year-old Carvalho.
Fred
J. Sancho
Manchester United
71' United make their first substitution of the game. Their first-half goalscorer Sancho goes off. Fred replaces him.
69' Alexander-Arnold swings a hopeful cross into United's box from deep. It's headed away. The ball soon returns to the Liverpool right-back. His volleyed centre from the right of the box is too powerful for a teammate to work with.
67' Alisson hands United a throw-in as he makes a hash of a pass out wide to Alexander-Arnold. Klopp is mightily frustrated down in the technical area.
66' Fabinho meets Robertson's deep corner with a header at the far post. De Gea gets down low to catch it.
65' Salah can't get away from Malacia down Liverpool's right. The Dutchman's perfectly happy to concede a corner.
63' Liverpool are still putting attacks together but none of them are paying off. Firmino swipes at thin air to the left of the box first, then Alexander-Arnold's throughball rolls harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
61' Firmino earns a free-kick for Liverpool down the left wing as he's clipped by McTominay. United get upfield quickly again and Alisson saves Fernandes' shot from the centre of the box.
Fabinho
J. Henderson
Liverpool
59' Liverpool feel compelled to make the game's first substitution. Fabinho replaces Henderson at the base of their midfield.
58' Liverpool are starting to snatch at chances. Elliott fires wide from the right of the box. They haven't been able to cope with United's intensity.
57' United quickly go up the other end and win a corner. Rashford's found by Varane and Alisson keeps the Englishman's shot out to hand United another corner. Liverpool deal with this one more easily.
55' Liverpool try to hit back straight away. De Gea's had little to do yet, but saves Diaz's shot from the right of the six-yard box.
54' Rashford's ended a run of 997 minutes without a goal for United in all competitions. No doubt he'll be glad about that. Only a certain Wayne Rooney has scored more than Rashford's five Premier League goals for United against Liverpool now.
A. Martial
Assist
Manchester United
53' Martial's quick thinking created that chance for Rashford, who certainly made the most of it. After a quick VAR check, the goal stands. It's like watching the United of old!
M. Rashford
Goal
Manchester United
53' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 2-0 LIVERPOOL! Rashford doubles United's lead through a classic counter-attack! Henderson misplaces a pass and Martial sends the Englishman running through on goal. Rashford has time to pick his spot, and duly dispatches the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
51' United go on the attack, but the offside flag goes up. Ten Hag's men are still organised and motivated.
49' Liverpool are awarded a free-kick down their right which Robertson swings in. It comes out to Elliott, whose shot is blocked by Martinez. Salah fires over from Alexander-Arnold's corner.
47' Milner's left-footed shot from the left of the box is blocked. Liverpool look sharper already.
46' United get the second half going. Klopp will want to see an improvement from his team in the next 45 minutes.
A. Martial
A. Elanga
Manchester United
46' United make a half-time substitution. Elanga picked up a knock in the first half, so Martial replaces him. The Frenchman will go up front, and Rashford will slot in on the left wing.
United will be confident of holding onto a result from here. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 117 Premier League matches when leading at half-time, dating back to their memorable 5-3 loss away to Leicester City in September 2014. Liverpool need to up their game if they want to avoid defeat.
Well, this is an unexpected turnaround so far. United have recovered from their woes last week to go in 1-0 up at the break thanks to Sancho's silky finish. Ten Hag has certainly whipped his team into shape. For the third time already this season, Liverpool go in at half-time behind.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 LIVERPOOL
Diogo Dalot
Yellow Card
Manchester United
45' Dalot's crude challenge on Diaz earns him a booking. There'll be just one minute added on before half-time.
44' Van Dijk's laxness almost hands United a shooting opportunity but Alisson spares his teammate's blushes. Up the other end, Dalot scythes down Diaz to leave the Colombian writhing down on the touchline.
42' Robertson darts onto Elliott's lovely weighted pass towards the byline. Varane blocks the Scot's cross and clears the resulting corner.
40' Firmino's lay-off sets up Salah in the box. The Egyptian's effort ricochets out for a corner. Milner nods the delivery into Fernandes, who clumsily whacks it into Martinez on the goalline! Martinez is able to clear at the second attempt. That was almost a comedy goal for United to concede. Elliott's own attempt at goal rolls wide.
39' Dalot punts Elliott's lax pass for Diaz away. Liverpool have had plenty of the ball but are struggling to find the final pass at the moment.
38' Liverpool's pressing makes things awkward for Varane, who's forced to hand the visitors a throw-in. Malacia clears the resulting ball in, and Fernandes eases the pressure on United by buying a free-kick.
37' Milner tries to run in behind United's defence down Liverpool's right. Martinez sweeps up in a no-nonsense fashion.
35' Liverpool put together some silky passing on the edge of United's box to set up a cross by Alexander-Arnold. It deflects to Elliott, whose snap shot is blocked.
34' Alisson races out of his goal to clear a throughball. United take the throw-in quickly but can't test the Liverpool goalkeeper.
32' Liverpool have had 82 per cent possession in the last 15 minutes. They've achieved precious little with it though.
31' Henderson tries to flick Alexander-Arnold's corner on but it's too high for him. Alexander-Arnold intercepts the clearance but his follow-up delivery is all wrong.
30' Dias jinks into the box and feigns to shoot before carrying the ball towards the byline. Dalot blocks the cross to hand Liverpool their first corner of the game.
29' Henderson latches onto Salah's looped cross to shin wide from the edge of the box.
R. Varane
Yellow Card
Manchester United
27' Diaz knocks the ball past Varane and gets cleaned out by the Frenchman. Varane's shown the yellow card.
25' Eriksen curls in the free-kick, aiming for the top right corner with a cross-cum-shot. Alisson tips it over the crossbar for a United corner that Liverpool easily defend.
T. Alexander-Arnold
Yellow Card
Liverpool
24' Alexander-Arnold's booked for his trip on Elanga. Eriksen will take the free-kick from United's left.
24' Elanga turns Alexander-Arnold and slips between the Liverpool right-back and Gomez. Alexander-Arnold responds by bringing the United winger down.
22' Elliott finds Milner to the right of United's box. The veteran midfielder can't control the ball though, and United get a goal-kick.
20' Rashford has another shot blocked from the edge of the box as he latches onto Sancho's pass. Liverpool look rattled.
19' Sancho's goal means that Liverpool have conceded first in seven successive games for the first time in the Premier League. Liverpool's defence is leakier these days than it was a few seasons ago.
18' Diaz cuts inside from the left, gets the ball back from Elliott, and lashes wide of the right-hand post. Liverpool are yet to get going.
A. Elanga
Assist
Manchester United
17' Elanga will be disappointed not to have scored earlier, but he played a key role in United's goal with Eriksen there. United have started this game much the better side.
J. Sancho
Goal
Manchester United
16' GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 LIVERPOOL! Sancho hands United the lead they deserve! Elanga plays a one-two with Eriksen to fire a low cross from the left. Sancho gets on the end of it in the centre of the box and pulls off a dummy to slot past Alisson!
15' Varane makes an excellent challenge to prevent Firmino from getting a shot off in the box. It works out well for United...
14' Elanga tries to dart onto Martinez's over-the-top pass. Alexander-Arnold comes out on top.
12' Liverpool haven't found their feet yet. Alexander-Arnold attempts to set Salah free down the right. His pass bounces out of play to cheers from the United fans.
10' Elanga hits the post! McTominay plays a sliderule pass for Fernandes, who hooks it on to the Swede. Elanga shoots first-time from the edge of the box with Alisson rushing at him and hits the right-hand upright! In the end, United have to settle for a corner which comes to nothing.
8' Van Dijk chests the corner safely back to Alisson. Still, these are promising signs for United.
7' Rashford shows good strength to hold off Alexander-Arnold and win a free-kick for United just outside the box. Eriksen swings it towards goal and it deflects off Liverpool's wall to hand United an early corner.
5' Milner finds time in United's box, but can't escape the attention of Varane who treads on the Liverpool man's foot. Milner goes down, but it's never a penalty.
3' United already look sharper than they did against Brentford. Rashford's slipped through on goal down the middle. Van Dijk gets across to block the Englishman's hasty shot.
1' We're underway here at Old Trafford!
This is the first ever top-flight meeting between this pair where both teams have come into it winless after the start of the season. United have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Liverpool, who are looking to win three consecutive league games at Old Trafford for the first time. Will they? Let's find out!
There are three changes to Liverpool from their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last time out. Gomez and Henderson start, while Firmino replaces the suspended Darwin Nunez.
Ten Hag makes four changes to the United team that suffered that ignominous defeat to Brentford. Varane, Malacia, McTominay and Elanga are the players trusted to make amends for United. Maguire, Ronaldo, Fred and Shaw are all benched.
SUBS: Fabinho, Nathaniel Phillips, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Fabio Carvalho, Sepp van den Berg, Harvey Davies, Adrian, Bobby Clark, Stefan Bajcetic.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; James Milner, Jordan Henderson (c), Harvey Elliott; Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz.
SUBS: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Heaton, Alejandro Garnacho, Harry Maguire, Fred, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia; Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay; Anthony Elanga, Bruno Fernandes (c), Jadon Sancho; Marcus Rashford.
Given the scale of United's issues, Liverpool are the last opponents United would want to face right now. Jurgen Klopp's Reds are also yet to pick up a win this season, but remain scary opponents and will be licking their lips at facing their most bitter rivals at their lowest ebb. Things could get worse for United before they get better.
United have got some serious work to do. After their embarrassing 4-0 hammering away to Brentford last time out, the Red Devils have started their Premier League season with two defeats, leaving them in the unfamiliar position of the relegation zone. With unrest amongst the fans, Erik ten Hag needs to get a tune of his players fast.
