Leeds United v Aston Villa Live Commentary, 02/10/2022

0 - 0
Elland Road

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
A point apiece sees neither side make much progression up the table, with Leeds rising to 12th above Bournemouth. Villa remain 14th with eight points, as both sides' stuttering starts to the season continue.
Watkins had several chances to win it for the Villans, but was denied time and time again by Leeds' back five. He finished the game with an xG of 1.09, suggesting he should've had one goal at least! Four of his six shots were on target, and all came from inside the box, where he had 13 touches. He contested 17 duels, eight of which came in the air, and he won four of these aerial battles, as well as four free-kicks!
The 10 men of Leeds hold firm, and hold onto a hard-earned point in an extremely entertaining stalemate! Villa began to throw everything at the Whites before Sinisterra had even reached his early bath, but despite testing Meslier on several occasions, couldn't breach the valiant Leeds defence and the spoils are shared!
90' + 3' BLOCKED!!! Bamford holds off Bednarek before cutting the ball back to Klich, whose first-time shot is blocked over the crossbar by a desperate sliding challenge from McGinn!
90' + 2' WIDE!! McGinn picks up a loose ball in space and drives towards goal, but drags his 20-yard effort wide of the target!
90' + 2' Watkins is sandwiched in a challenge between Struijk and Firpo, and Villa gain another free-kick opportunity to cross into the area.
90' We'll play four extra minutes of added time, and can either side find a late winner?
89' SAVED!!! Buendia flicks Coutinho's pass forward for Watkins, who shoots from the edge of the six-yard box but is denied by Meslier, who parries it behind!
88' Villa players queue up on the edge of the box and it comes to Buendia, but he's prevented from shooting by Adams, who wins possession!
87' Buendia attempts to find success with a pass into the box, but Cooper scythes it clear once again for Leeds. They'll do well to hold out for the remaining minutes with 10 men.
85' Watkins runs out of room in the box and finds Luiz, who lays it off for McGinn to shoot, but a flying Ayling blocks the first-time effort!
R. Koch
Yellow Card
Leeds United
83' Another foul, and another Leeds player in the book, as Koch tugs at the shirt of Watkins before being penalised and yellow carded by the referee.
D. Ings
J. Ramsey
Aston Villa
82' Ramsey's next off for Villa, who go for a more attacking option in Danny Ings, hoping to find a late winner to this cagey encounter.
82' The free-kick is dealt with and Villa look to counter, but Koch slides in on Ramsey and wins the ball back for the hosts!
81' Summerville feeds Bamford, but he's barrelled over by Mings, who is penalised but not booked by the referee.
81' Only Brentford (four) have scored more goals from high turnovers in the Premier League this season than Leeds’ three, while only Liverpool (28) and Manchester City (29) have had fewer high turnovers against them than Aston Villa (38).
M. Klich
B. Aaronson
Leeds United
79' Aaronson is also withdrawn by Jesse Marsch (from afar), with Mateusz Klich coming into the midfield.
C. Summerville
J. Harrison
Leeds United
79' Harrison's off in Leeds' next change, and Crysencio Summerville will see out the game.
78' SAVED!!! Bamford beats two on his way into the box and smashes a shot from a tight angle, which Martinez parries! Konsa and Aaronson both slide in for the rebound, with the Villa defender getting the crucial touch and Martinez smothers the ball!
77' Young escapes Aaronson and crosses from the left, but pressure from Firpo prevents Watkins getting a clean connection with his header!
76' SAVED!!! Watkins cuts inside Koch before shooting, but hardly troubles Meslier at his front post, who holds the shot!
75' WIDE!!! Buendia's cross-field pass to Young is cut back inside to Coutinho, who snatches at a shot from close-range, putting it wide of the far post!
73' CHANCE!!! Luiz attempts to beat the goalkeeper from the corner and very nearly does, but Konsa can't quite connect at the back post and the ball goes behind!
73' Coutinho's dribbles past Koch and into the box, but his cross to the far post is headed behind by Firpo!
72' WIDE!!! Buendia turns and bypasses Cooper as he fires a beauty of a shot towards goal, that beats Meslier but dips just to the wrong side of his left post!
70' Harrison whips a deep free-kick into the area, and Bamford climbs high but can't quite connect with the cross at the back post.
P. Bamford
Leeds United
68' Rodrigo's seen almost none of the ball in this second half, and Patrick Bamford takes his place up front.
L. Ayling
R. Kristensen
Leeds United
68' Leeds make a double change, with Kristensen off first for a face-mask donning Luke Ayling.
66' Koch's flat on his back after colliding with Young, and there's plenty of time being taken to ensure the Leeds defender is okay to carry on.
E. Buendía
L. Bailey
Aston Villa
64' That foul is Bailey's last action, as he's brought off for Emi Buendia in Villa's first change of the half.
L. Bailey
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
64' Bailey loses out to Harrison, who races up-field with the ball, but he's clipped from behind by the Villa winger and he is booked.
62' Watkins crosses from the byline, looking for the run of Ramsey, but it's a poor ball that rolls straight into Meslier's gloves.
61' Harrison looks to press Konsa with his back to goal but takes his legs from underneath him, conceding yet another free-kick.
60' OVER!! Young finds Ramsey centrally, who tries to pick his spot from the edge of the box but sends his right-footed shot skywards!
60' Villa have won their last two away league games against Leeds, as many as they had in their previous 17 such visits to Elland Road. They’ve never won three in a row in LS11 before.
Junior Firpo
Marc Roca
Leeds United
58' Roca comes off in Leeds' first change, with Junior Firpo coming on to make his first appearance of the season.
58' Luiz comes short for the next corner, but Meslier chooses to punch rather than catch and Leeds are put under more pressure!
57' Coutinho shrugs off Adams before finding Young in space, but his cross into the six-yard box is blocked behind by Kristensen.
55' Leeds press like a team possessed but Konsa is able to find Watkins on halfway, who is fouled by Koch as Leeds concede yet another needless free-kick!
54' Coutinho has four goal involvements in his two previous Premier League appearances against Leeds (two goals and assists each), and could become the first Villa player since John Carew (against Stoke in December 2009) to net in each of his first three appearances against an opponent in the competition.
53' Coutinho goes down in the box, but the ball skids to an offside Watkins, who creates shooting space before play is halted!
52' Sinisterra had scored in each of his first three starts for the club in all competitions, and could have become only the second player in the club’s history to score in his first four starts, after Charlie Keetley way back in 1928, but he won't get that chance now!
50' CHANCE!!!! What a pair of opportunities for Villa!!! Bailey's cross is met on the volley by Coutinho, who's flying shot smashes back off the post!! Watkins follows in, but prods the rebound wide of the same upright!
48' RED CARD!!! After a foul on Ramsey, play stops and Villa prepare to take the free-kick. Sinisterra doesn't retreat 10 yards from the free-kick, and so the referee pulls out another and sends him off! Harsh indeed, but rules are rules, and Leeds go down to 10 men!
48' Leeds have lost four and won just one of their last 10 Premier League home games against Aston Villa, a 3-1 victory on the final day of the 2002-03 campaign.
46' Coutinho kicks off the second half, and we're back underway at Elland Road!
The teams are back for the second half, and can either side find the quality in the final third that is required to win this match?
Rodrigo's been right in the thick of it for Leeds, having three shots off-target and winning half of his four duels in the air. In defence, he's made two clearing headers from Aston Villa corners, and, in the spirit of this game so far, has committed three fouls. His yellow card, Leeds' third, wasn't for one of them though - he was booked for dissent following a few heavy challenges on his Leeds teammates.
An electric first-half comes to an end, with both teams throwing everything at each other!!! It's been full pelt for 45 minutes, and despite both teams creating some half-chances, neither side has been able to keep the composure to put one in the back of the net! It's been a fiery affair, with four yellow cards showing just how much these two sides want to beat one another.
45' + 5' CHANCE!!! McGinn whips a cross in for Ramsey, who can't quite control the ball before Meslier snatches it from him!
J. Bednarek
L. Augustinsson
Aston Villa
45' + 4' Augustinsson is forced off by that injury, and Jan Bednarek takes his place in the back four, also making his debut. Young will likely move into left-back following this change.
45' + 2' More bad news on the injury front for Villa, as Augustinsson pulls up and hits the deck. It looks likely he won't be carrying on, likely forcing Steven Gerrard into another defensive reshuffle!
45' + 1' SAVED!!! Harrison's inside cross finds Rodrigo in the box, who nudges away Konsa before bringing the ball down and shooting, drawing a save from Martinez before the referee blows for the foul on Konsa!
45' + 1' We're into three minutes of added time to close out this first half.
45' SAVED!!! Ramsey streaks past Cooper and passes inside to Bailey, whose first-time shot is straight into the gloves of Meslier!
44' Good link-up play from Sinisterra and Struijk results in a cross from the latter, but it's nowhere near where Rodrigo wants the ball and Martinez gathers.
42' Leeds look to break from the corner but Aaronson's put on the deck once again, but this time the referee does blow for a free-kick in his favour.
41' Leeds conceded five goals in their last league game against Brentford, as many goals as they had conceded in their first five of 2022-23. Indeed, since returning to the Premier League in 2020, Leeds have shipped 5+ goals in more different top-flight games than any other side (five times).
40' SAVED!!! Young puts Watkins through on goal, but Meslier races out to parry the shot and Koch puts it out for a corner!
Yellow Card
Leeds United
39' Rodrigo is yellow carded for Leeds after expressing his frustration about Villa's aggressive challenges, and becomes the third Leeds player to be booked.
38' Aaronson is left in a heap by Ramsey but Kristensen carries on forward. He feeds Sinisterra, who finds Struijk, and he's smashed by Bailey this time! It's becoming a really spicy contest!
37' Villa's corner is headed away from a crowded box, but after Young crosses back into the area, Meslier misses his punch and an Adams block concedes another!
36' A poor Aaronson touch gives McGinn space to shoot, and he does so from 25 yards, with a deflection off Koch taking the ball behind for a corner!
Marc Roca
Yellow Card
Leeds United
35' Roca slides in to win a 50-50, but catches Watkins extremely late, and is rightfully booked by the referee.
34' Rodrigo has been a key performer for Leeds this season. The striker is the side's leading scorer with four goals, and is tied for fifth among the league's top scorers in 2022-23.
32' Konsa smashes through Rodrigo as he wins a header inside the Villa box, and despite the outrage of Leeds' players and fans, it's no penalty!
32' OVER!!! Watkins attacks Coutinho's free-kick swung into the box, but he's flagged offside as he heads over the bar!
31' Harrison is dispossessed in midfield and Ramsey races away down the left. Koch ushers him and the ball out, but play is called back for a free-kick against Kristensen.
29' Ramsey latches onto a loose ball and tries his luck from 20 yards, but Roca gets in the way and blocks it wide for a Villa corner.
28' A poor Martinez kick is made good by Bailey, who attempts to flick it beyond Struijk but is fouled by the Leeds left-back.
27' Ramsey picks up a knock trying to dispossess Roca, and heads to the sideline for further assessment on what appears to be a calf injury.
L. Sinisterra
Yellow Card
Leeds United
26' Sinisterra attempts to find Aaronson running into the box, but the pass is cut out by McGinn, who is subsequently fouled by Leeds' Colombian winger, who is booked by the referee as a result.
24' Leeds are unbeaten at Elland Road in the league so far this season – only twice in the Premier League have they avoided defeat in each of their first four home league games of a campaign, in 1992-93 and 2001-02.
23' WIDE!!! Roca finds Rodrigo 25 yards from goal, who turns under no pressure from Konsa, and whips a curling shot just around the outside of the far post!
22' CHANCE!!!! Aaronson finds Sinisterra, who gets past Young and crosses for Rodrigo. He's really stretching for it, but can't connect with the ball and the chance goes begging!
20' Villa have picked up four points from their last two league games, one more than in their first five of the season. Meanwhile, the Villans could record consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since April.
18' SAVED!!! Coutinho rushes up the other end and dribbles into the box. With Ramsey to his right, he fires an off-balance shot to Meslier's left, and the Leeds keeper saves and holds it!
18' Aaronson swings in a corner for Leeds, but Cooper's glancing header doesn't connect properly and the ball rolls into Martinez's gloves.
17' CHANCE!!! A short Konsa backpass has Rodrigo racing onto it, but Martinez scythes it clear before the striker can pounce, as Aaronson did against Chelsea earlier this season!
16' Villa have got the better of Leeds lately, and are unbeaten in their last three Premier League matches against the Whites. Leeds are looking for their first league win in over Villa since October 2020, when a Bamford hat-trick saw them triumph 3-0 at Villa Park. Villa have outscored the Whites 7-3 during their unbeaten streak.
15' SAVED!!! Coutinho's volleyed pass puts Watkins into space, and he rushes into the box before striking a left-footed shot which Meslier saves! Coutinho slides in to prod it home, but the Leeds goalkeeper gathers before he can do so!
14' Aaronson releases Rodrigo, who ghosts behind Konsa and flashes the ball across the face of goal. Martinez comes, but misses the ball, however he catches Kristensen's cross from the other side!
12' Leeds break through Harrison, who races towards the box before losing the ball. Rodrigo's shot on the rebound is blocked, and Sinisterra's cross back into the area is headed clear.
11' McGinn's deep free-kick is crossed into the box, but Meslier misjudges the flight of the ball and can only flap at it, conceding a corner in the process.
10' Villa's leading lights in attack have been starters Ramsey, Bailey, and Luiz, who have each scored once so far this season.
9' Bailey is put in behind Struijk and crosses to the back post. McGinn is arriving late, but Watkins takes the first touch and takes it away from his captain's feet!
8' BLOCKED!!! Sinisterra dances in-field and finds Harrison, who releases Kristensen into space. He drives forward and passes to Aaronson in the box, whose lay-off for Rodrigo results in a shot that Mings blocks into the arms of Martinez!
L. Augustinsson
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
6' Koch hits a pass down the line for Kristensen, but he's brought down by Augustinsson, who picks up a sixth-minute booking on his Villa debut.
6' In three league matches at home this season, Leeds are unbeaten with two wins and one draw. The Whites will be out to prolong a four-match home unbeaten streak, dating back to May of last season. Ending their away-day frustrations will be the aim for Villa, who have not found their form this season on their travels, with three losses in three matches.
4' Young crosses into the box from deep, but Mings takes down Harrison as he attacks the ball and concedes a free-kick.
3' Bailey commits a foul and proceeds to kick the ball away in frustration, earning himself a word with the referee after just two minutes!
2' Villa won the last Premier League meeting between the teams, triumphing 3-0 at Elland Road last season in Jesse Marsch’s first home game after succeeding Marcelo Bielsa. Coutinho struck first in the 22nd minute, with absentees Matty Cash and Calum Chambers also finding the net.
1' Rodrigo kicks off for Leeds, and we are off and running inside Elland Road!
The teams are out onto the pitch, and kick-off is just moments away here!
Despite a break of over two weeks for the visitors, it's still a Villa side hampered by Injuries. Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne miss out on this occasion, resulting in Douglas Luiz and Ludwig Augustinsson coming into Steven Gerrard’s side. The latter makes his debut at left-back for the Villans at Elland Road.
Nearly a month without fixtures means the Leeds side will be thoroughly refreshed ahead of this game. They’ve got several returnees from injury too, with Rasmus Kristensen, top scorer Rodrigo, and captain Liam Cooper back in the side. The latter takes the place of Diego Llorente, who is joined on the bench by fit-again Junior Firpo and Patrick Bamford.
ASTON VILLA SUBS: Robin Olsen, Morgan Sanson, Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia, Marvelous Nakamba, Jan Bednarek, Leander Dendoncker, Cameron Archer, Lamare Bogarde.

Hosts Leeds started the season strongly with two wins from three, including a 3-0 drubbing of Chelsea, but are winless in their last three games, and were smashed 5-2 by Brentford in their last outing.
