Commentary

Everton travel to West Ham next for a game that'll have big implications for both, while Villa host Manchester United. Knowing Everton lately, they'll probably go and win that match. Football, eh? That's all for now. Goodbye!
Everton stay eighth, three points behind West Ham United in fifth, after their eighth home defeat of the season. They're like Jekyll and Hyde home and away this season and won't progress much further until they fix it. Villa rise to ninth, four points behind Everton. Europe's probably beyond them now but they're still having a very good campaign.
Everton sink to yet another home defeat thanks to El Ghazi's lovely curler. Villa were the better side pretty much throughout, regularly worrying Everton's defence. Everton looked short of invention in open play. These two teams will do all this again at Villa Park in 12 days' time.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: EVERTON 1-2 ASTON VILLA
90' + 3' Everton muster one last attack. Digne cracks a shot against a defender from way out, and that's it!
K. Davis
A. El Ghazi
Aston Villa
90' + 2' Villa substitution. The likely matchwinner El Ghazi goes off. Davis comes on for the last few minutes.
90' + 1' There'll be three minutes of added time. Everton do not look like scoring again.
A. El Ghazi
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
90' El Ghazi's booked for that cynical foul on Allan. He'd already been beaten to the ball.
89' El Ghazi tugs down Allan and gives away a foul. The Dutchman doesn't look happy with his shoulder but he'll be able to soldier on.
J. Ramsey
Bertrand Traoré
Aston Villa
88' Villa make a change. Ramsey comes on for Traore who's had a decent game.
87' Barkley wins a free-kick down Villa's left as he's taken out by Allan. Pickford claims the resulting free-kick and is fouled in the process.
85' King beats Konsa to the ball and drags wide of the left-hand post. Everton have five minutes to avoid another giveaway at Goodison Park.
84' Villa have been buoyed by that goal. Traore has a pop at goal from distance and isn't too far away.
J. King
G. Sigurðsson
Everton
82' Everton react immediately to going behind by throwing another striker on. King replaces Sigurdsson.
81' That's El Ghazi's eighth Premier League goal of the season. That's twice as many as he got last campaign in 11 fewer appearances. Villa have dipped lately but their improvement this season has still been notable.
Bertrand Traoré
Assist
Aston Villa
81' All Traore had to do there was find El Ghazi and the Dutchman did the rest. It was a beautiful goal worthy of winning any match.
A. El Ghazi
Goal
Aston Villa
80' GOAL! EVERTON 1-2 ASTON VILLA! Everton are heading for another home defeat! The hosts get caught out in transition and Traore finds El Ghazi who takes a touch on the edge of the D and curls a wonderful effort into the far corner.
78' Traore is offside from Mings' throughball. Douglas Luiz gallops towards goal only to find his run brought to an abrupt end. Everton counter and Calvert-Lewin skids an effort wide.
Bernard
A. Iwobi
Everton
76' Everton substitution. Bernard replaces the ineffectual Iwobi. The hosts have missed the mercurial Rodriguez.
75' Now Everton are starting to build in momentum. Sigurdsson rattles a shot into the arms of Martinez but Coleman had already fouled El Ghazi in the build-up.
73' Villa's threat has subsided for now. Douglas Luiz unfairly trips Calvert-Lewin as he tussles for the ball in Everton's half.
71' Digne sends a high ball towards Martinez who plucks it from the air.
F. Delph
André Gomes
Everton
70' Everton make the game's first substitution. Delph comes on to add more bite to their midfield. Gomes makes way.
69' Ancelotti looks a little concerned down on the touchline. The Italian has reason to be too. Villa's shots have dried up this half but they're dictating the game at the moment.
67' Pickford claims a cross that comes into his area. Digne is moving a little gingerly after getting caught by the England goalkeeper but looks fine to carry on.
66' Everton see off the free-kick without much incident. Villa are the side pushing more convincingly for a winner though.
65' Watkins draws a foul from Godfrey as he stretches to reach a pass. The striker's having a fine game for Villa.
63' Villa win a corner which Barkley will take. Barkley passes it short to Watkins who finds time to shift his feet and fizz across the face of goal. Everton are relieved to see the ball pass through without a Villa touch.
61' Villa briefly look in trouble as Richarlison darts behind their defence to take down a direct ball. The Brazilian lays off to Sigurdsson who passes to an imaginary team-mate. Richarlison repeats the trick seconds later and gets a weak shot away at Martinez.
59' McGinn wins a free-kick near the centre circle as Godfrey clatters into the back of him.
57' After a fairly balanced first half Villa have had 68 per cent of possession so far in this one. Everton have retreated somewhat.
55' Allan's sent running towards goal by Coleman but can't get his shot right. Shortly after Watkins is caught offside, Richarlison latches onto a direct pass by Pickford and fizzes an effort wide.
53' Iwobi dribbles towards goal and goes for the top right corner from the edge of the box. The Nigerian misjudges the shot and it flies over.
51' Watkins holds up the ball well and has a shot blocked before flicking towards goal. It's an easy catch for Martinez.
49' Both teams are still getting back into the swing of things. Calvert-Lewin tries to beat his man and fails.
47' Villa get forward from the kick-off and win a corner off Godfrey. Everton stay firm.
45' The second half's now under way. No changes at half-time.
No side has hit the woodwork more often than Villa's 20 times this season. Barkley and El Ghazi will both be cursing their luck. Smith's side should be upbeat, though, as there's every chance they could leave Goodison Park with a win. Everton have played OK but Ancelotti will want to see more from his team in the second half.
It's all square at half-time in what's so far been an open and entertaining affair. Villa grabbed the lead early on as Watkins pounced on Holgate's mistake, only to be pegged back minutes later by Calvert-Lewin's header from a corner. Villa have come closest to scoring again, hitting the woodwork twice.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: EVERTON 1-1 ASTON VILLA
45' + 3' Everton enjoy one last chance before the end of the half as Digne's cross causes confusion in Villa's box. Sigurdsson looks to capitalise but Villa recover to block. Time for a break!
45' + 1' Villa concede another corner as El Ghazi nods over his own crossbar. Villa get rid of it but remain under pressure and Richarlison has an effort closed down.
45' There'll be three minutes added onto the end of this half. Everton win another corner down their right.
44' Everton see the corner out. Digne wins a timely foul for the hosts, getting caught by Traore as he makes a clearance.
43' Watkins wriggles into the penalty area and drags a shot wide of the right-hand post. It takes a deflection somewhere and Villa have a corner. Villa are ending the half the better side.
42' Martinez punches away Everton's free-kick from out wide. Coleman fires over from outside the box. This game has been a ding-dong affair so far.
Douglas Luiz
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
41' Douglas Luiz trips Richarlison from behind and concedes a free-kick. The Brazilian's booked for the foul.
39' Holgate clears Villa's latest cross and Everton try to counter. Unfortunately for them Iwobi's pass to Calvert-Lewin isn't the right one.
37' Barkley hits the bottom of the post with a left-footed drive from outside the box! Pickford is beaten. The ball rebounds off the woodwork and safely away for Everton.
35' Everton reach the byline and Digne passes back to Sigurdsson. Villa close the Icelander down quickly and block his shot. Calvert-Lewin gets caught offside shortly after.
33' Villa think they've won a throw-in but Everton still have the ball. Sigurdsson fires off target from distance.
31' Villa almost regain the lead! Cash fizzes a fantastic ball across the face of goal that Watkins prods towards Pickford. Pickford manages to keep it out and El Ghazi lashes the follow-up against the crossbar. Everton survive for now.
29' Traore has a pop from the edge of the box but Pickford is equal to it, handing Villa a corner. Villa win another corner before Everton manage to clear. The opening half hour of this game has been very even.
27' Digne brings down Traore in a centre-right position for Villa. The ex-Everton man Barkley goes for goal but can't keep his free-kick down.
25' Before Targett gets treated, Everton keep attacking. Sigurdsson's effort from outside the box is blocked and Martinez catches Calvert-Lewin's header from Digne's cross. Richarlison gets caught offside from Coleman's pass. Targett soon gets to his feet.
23' Villa come back on the attack straight away as McGinn has an effort blocked. Up the other end, Targett tangles with Richarlison and comes off the worst. The Villa left-back is going to require treatment.
21' That's Calvert-Lewin's 20th goal of the season in all competitions. It's his seventh Premier League header this campaign. He's scored more headers than anyone else. No side has conceded a higher proportion of their goals from headers than Villa.
L. Digne
Assist
Everton
19' Digne's corner for that goal was perfect. It was high with plenty of curl. Villa could do nothing about it and Calvert-Lewin's movement was excellent.
D. Calvert-Lewin
Goal
Everton
19' GOAL! EVERTON 1-1 ASTON VILLA! This game could be fun. Everton win a corner down their right and Digne swings it in. Calvert-Lewin peels off at the far post and powers a header past Martinez.
17' Watkins almost scores again as Konsa fires a pass over the top for him to chase. This time Pickford closes down the angle at the near post and makes the block.
15' Watkins takes a whack in the face from Holgate's elbow as the pair challenge for an aerial ball. Watkins initially holds his face but recovers soon enough.
14' Watkins has done his England chances no harm with that goal. There's no need for Everton to worry yet though. Villa have opened the scoring in their last three Premier League games but have failed to go on to win any of them.
O. Watkins
Goal
Aston Villa
13' GOAL! EVERTON 0-1 ASTON VILLA! Villa take the lead after an error from Holgate! Holgate plays himself into trouble and Watkins presses him into giving the ball away. Watkins races after the loose ball and lashes it past Pickford into the bottom left corner.
12' Cash switches the play to the left flank and Villa keep the ball moving. Targett floats a cross into the penalty area and Pickford flaps at it before claiming it at the second attempt.
10' It's all very loose in midfield with neither side finding a foothold in the game yet. Targett is overeager in closing down Iwobi in his own half and gives away a free-kick.
8' Everton knock the ball around at the back without much purpose until Holgate strides forward with it. The centre-back pings a pass towards Calvert-Lewin but Villa snap up the second ball.
6' The ball ricochets out of Everton's penalty area and McGinn sends a rocket over the crossbar with his left foot from range.
4' Cash bundles over Richarlison who doesn't get a free-kick. Villa sportingly put the ball out of play to allow Richarlison to get to his feet.
2' Gomes fizzes a pass down the line to precisely no one, handing Villa a throw-in. Let's hope it's not a scruffy game.
1' We're under way here in Liverpool!
1' Iwobi introduces himself to the game straight away, cutting in from the right to smash a shot into a crowd of Villa defenders. Villa soon clear.
There's a late change to Everton's line-up as Rodriguez has picked up an injury in the warm-up. Iwobi replaces him. Everton are in their home kit, as are Villa. It's all reassuringly old-fashioned.
Everton failed to win either Premier League game against Villa last season, the first time that had happened since 2011-12. The last time they failed to beat Villa during three or more games in a row was between 2006 and 2012 when these two were last competing in the top half of the table. Villa usually enjoy playing against the Toffees. Is another away win on the cards at Goodison Park?
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti sticks with the same 11 that pulled off a 1-0 smash-and-grab away to Arsenal last time out. Dean Smith makes just the one change to Villa from their 2-2 draw with West Brom. Cash is back from suspension so El Mohamady drops to the bench.

Eighth-placed Everton still harbour hopes of playing in Europe next season despite their patchy home form. Mid-table Villa have dipped since the turn of the year, losing nine times in 18 matches, and have struggled without their talisman Jack Grealish. It's a storied fixture, this one, and this game is sure to create its own share of stories. Let's go!
This is the first league meeting of the season between Everton and Villa, the latest first meeting between two sides in the English top-flight since 1987-88. After 204 previous meetings between these two sides, this is the top-flight's most played fixture, and one that will be played again in less than two weeks' time.
