Gbenga Ogunbote’s men began their Caf Confederation Cup campaign on a winning note against the Ethiopian side

Enugu Rangers got their Caf Confederation Cup campaign off to a winning note with a 2-0 victory over Defense Force on Wednesday.

Godwin Aguda’s penalty goals were all the Nigerian Federation Cup champions needed to silence the troublesome visitors.

Coming into the game on the back of their loss to Lobi Stars in the Super Cup, the Coal City team were hoping to get a convincing home win in their bid to make the return leg a mere formality.

Despite their dominance, the Nigerians were unable to find the net as the Ethiopians held firm to defend in their numbers.

In the second half, coach Gbenga Ogunbote threw in Kelvin Itoya and Ajani Ibrahim into the fray – and their introduction proved to be the masterstroke.

Ajani was fouled inside the penalty area of Defence Force and the referee awarded a penalty kick with Aguda making no mistakes in sending the goalkeeper the wrong way in the 55th minute.

And with eight minutes to the end of the game, Enugu Rangers were gifted another penalty after Itoya was hacked down by a defender.

Again, Aguda was the man as he masterfully put the ball inside the net. Ogunbote’s side hold a slim 2-0 advantage going into the second leg billed for December 5.

Winners on aggregate will face either Morocco's Hassania Agadir or Niger Republic's AS GNN in the First round
