    The third goalkeeper on the list, Mexican goalkeeper Carbajal also made five FIFA World Cup™ final appearances. Carbajal holds the record of the youngest goalkeeper to play in that tournament. He was 22-years-old. He appeared in 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962 and 1966 editions.

    German footballer Matthaus did not only historically captain West Germany to victory in the 1990 FIFA World Cup™, he was also named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year. He remains the only German to have received the award. The 57-year-old also appeared in five FIFA World Cup™ finals (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998) and holds the record for the most FIFA World Cup™ matches played by a single player, 25.

    #5 Gianluigi Buffon - Four FIFA World Cup™ appearances

    Legendary Italian goalkeeper Buffon has appeared on four FIFA World Cup™ finals althought he was a squad member without appearing at the 1998 edition in France. Buffon apeared in the 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 finals. Buffon was unfortunate to miss out on what would have been a recordbreaking fifth appearance at the current edition in Russia after being denied by Italy's collapse in a play-off against Sweden. The 2006 FIFA World Cup™ winner is also the most capped Azzurri international with 176 appearances.

    Legendary wingback Nilton Santos also played in four FIFA World Cups™ with the Selecao. Santos was a member of the Brazil squads that won the 1958 and 1962 FIFA World Cups™. He was also in the Brazilian squad for the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cups™. Regarded as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game, Santos died in 2013 aged 88.
