Bafana Bafana Player Ratings: Mthethwa and Mayo shine against Botswana

22:56 EAT 27/09/2022
Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Bafana Bafana, September 2022
South Africa secured their second consecutive victory when they defeated the Zebras on Tuesday evening.

Bafana Bafana edged out Botswana 1-0 in an international friendly match that took place at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Teboho Mokoena's first-half strike earned coach Hugo Broos' side a slender win and it was Bafana's second successive victory having defeated Sierra Leone on Saturday.

GOAL rates the performances of the South African players.

  • Veli Mothwa, Bafana Bafana, July 2021

    Veli Mothwa - 5.5/10

Busy between the sticks and didn't look assured.

Mothwa nearly made a costly mistake when he allowed Kabelo Seakanyeng to press him, but he recovered well and cleared the ball away.

He was then beaten by Seakanyeng's effort which hit the upright and Bafana cleared their lines and Mothwa ended the game with just one save to his name

  • Khuliso Mudau, Bafana Bafana, June 2022

    Khuliso Mudau - 7.5/10

    One of Bafana's standout performers.

Mudau was a huge menace going forward, laying key passes and completing long balls to stretch the Botswana defence out. He also did well defensively.

  • Siyanda Msani, Bafana Bafana, September 2022

    Siyanda Msani - 6/10

Played his first game under Broos.

Msani drove forward to join up the attack, linking up well with the attackers. However, his crosses were wayward and he will have to improve this aspect of his game.

  • Rushine De Reuck, Bafana Bafana, July 2021

    Rushine de Reuck - 7.5/10

Looked good in the heart of the backline.

De Reuck was solid in defence, making clearances and well-timed tackles. He also helped carry the ball forward a few times.

  • Siyanda Xulu, Bafana Bafana, March 2021

    Siyanda Xulu - 6/10

Captained Bafana with Ronwen Williams rested.

Xulu wasn't really tested by the Zebras defensively on the night. However, he organised the Bafana defence very well and his positioning was also good.

  • Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Bafana Bafana & Tumisang Orebonye, Botswana, September 2022

    Sibongiseni Mthethwa - 8/10

    Sparkled on his Bafana debut.

Mthethwa broke down Botswana's movements with crucial interceptions. His reading ability on the night was excellent too.

  • Teboho Mokoena, Bafana Bafana, August 2021

    Teboho Mokoena - 8/10

    An absolute force in midfield.

Mokoena was tidy in possession as the hosts' battering ram on the night. He scored with a well-taken free-kick to hand Bafana the win.

  • Goodman Mosele, Bafana Bafana, June 2022

    Goodman Mosele - 6/10

    Decent display.

Mosele was strong in the air, good in passing and making some good recoveries. However, his influence waned and he was the first Bafana player to be substituted.

  • Ashley du Preez, Bafana Bafana, September 2022

    Ashley du Preez - 6/10

    Created problems for Botswana.

Du Preez was able to get in behind the visitors' defence a few times thanks to his movement but he was wasteful. He failed to punish Malapela after the keeper had made a mistake.

  • Pule Mmodi, Bafana Bafana, September 2022

    Pule Mmodi - 5.5/10

Full of running throughout the game.

Mmodi demonstrated his uncanny ability to work in tight spaces, but didn't have much luck in finding the net and he couldn't seriously test goalkeeper Lesenya Malapela.

  • Khanyisa Mayo, Bafana Bafana, September 2022

    Khanyiso Mayo - 7/10

    South Africa's best attacker.

Mayo was a thorn in the Zebras' face with his incisive runs and combination play which unlocked the visitors' defence. He was just unlucky not to score on the night.

  • Luke Le Roux, Bafana Bafana, September 2022

    Luke le Roux - 5/10

Wasn't too effective in midfield after coming on in the 64th minute with Botswana looking dangerous on the counterattack.

  • Mihlali Mayambela of Bafana Bafana.

    Mihlali Mayambela - 6.5/10

Became a constant threat to the visitors' defence after coming on in the 68th minute as he made direct runs and he came close to scoring when his effort hit the upright.

  • Sphephelo Sithole of South Africa.

    Sphephelo Sithole - N/A

Didn't get enough time to make an impact having been introduced in the 83rd minute.
