Why the away record should be a concern to Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay

The Kenyan Champions defeated Zamalek 4-2 in the opening Group D match while the Angolan side fell 2-1 to Hussein Dey

Gor Mahia will no doubt be heading into the Caf Confederation Cup tie against Petro Atletico as the favorites if the Group D standing is anything to go by.

K’Ogalo is top of the group that also has Zamalek of Egypt and their neighbors Hussein Dey from Algeria having beaten the multiple African champions 4-2 in the opener staged in Nairobi last week.

But coach Hassan Oktay, who will be missing the services of two dependable players - striker Jacques Tuyisenge and defender Philemon Otieno - might have to visit the archive and retrieve K’Ogalo’s past-away records before he picks his starting squad for the tie set for Wednesday.

Gor Mahia beat Zamalek 4-2 at home.

Tuyisenge and Otieno are both suspended after picking accumulated cards in the last home victory staged at the Kasarani Stadium, but Oktay will have Ernest Wendo, who was out against Zamalek, available for selection.

Team news aside, Oktay, who hinted that he will use the same style employed against AFC Leopards whom they mauled 2-0 in last league game before the team left for Luanda, will head into the clash haunted by a poor away record.

The Kenyan champions are yet to pick a victory on the road, in the regulation time this campaign. Though the Kenyan side is yet to lose at home, Oktay’s best away result thus far was a Caf Champions League play-off win against Nyasa Big Bullets in the penalty shootout in Blantyre, Malawi.

Gor Mahia lost 2-0 away to Lobi Stars.

Gor Mahia then lost 2-0 to Nigerian side Lobi Stars, whom they had beaten 3-1 at home. Another trip away to Cameroon ended in a stalemate, but K’Ogalo nonetheless progressed to the Group Stages thanks to a 2-1 home victory.

The record Kenyan champions and 1987 Mandela Cup winners, kicked-off their group campaign on the right foot, but a poor away record should send some chills down the Cypriot’s nerves, if K’Ogalo are to better their 2018 display where they crashed out at the final group match, away to USM Alger.

Gor Mahia has scored just one away goal while conceding three in the process.
