An ironic tweet from Gary Lineker was not well received by Liverpool fans fuming over reports that Phillippe Coutinho is Barcelona-bound, as the Brazilian's record transfer provoked great debate on social media.
Both Liverpool and Barcelona confirmed on Saturday that a deal had been struck over his sale, in a move that is expected to smash the British transfer record.
And Lineker had his own take on matters that puzzled some of his followers.
Outrageous really that a player in his prime would ever want to leave a club in Liverpool for Barcelona.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) 6 de enero de 2018
"Outrageous really that a player in his prime would ever want to leave a club in Liverpool for Barcelona," he wrote on Twitter after news of the move broke.
Fans with shorter memories might not have been aware that his post was laced with self-referential irony: in 1986 the newly crowned World Cup Golden Boot winner swapped Everton for Barcelona, where he would spend three seasons.
And Lineker was suitably grateful to those who took the trouble to point that fact out to him.
Shit, so I did. https://t.co/UxgbGD0Ww0— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) 6 de enero de 2018
The ex-England star was far from the only person on the social media website to comment on the news, as Coutinho's decision to leave Anfield divided Liverpool fans and neutrals alike.
So now Barcelona have Brazil’s best midfielder AND Philippe Coutinho— Jack Lang (@jacklang) 6 de enero de 2018
Naive that anyone thought Coutinho wouldn't go in January.— Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) 6 de enero de 2018
"Get your head down and if we get the right dough in Jan, you can go"
Great £ for a player many Reds would have driven to Barca for £60m a year ago. A tenth of the loss of Suarez.
#LFC attacking options are way more robust than when Suarez left, so add that fact to the contribution of Coutinho and Suarez to the team and there surely can't be any argument as to which loss is bigger and by how much?— Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) 6 de enero de 2018
Suarez was irreplaceable!! Reds have Mane and Salah now!
Coutinho all set to be the first player since 1990 to play for Liverpool and also win a league title in the same season.— LJ™ (@RealTalkUnited) 6 de enero de 2018

Liverpool fans wondering why Coutinho signed for Barcelona. Lad’s going from 0 trophies in 5 years at Anfield to La Liga winner in 5 months.— FK ☕️ (@fkhanage) 6 de enero de 2018
It's pointless & ridiculous for anyone to blame FSG for sanctioning Coutinho's sale to Barcelona.— Chimezie Eze (@Chimezie__) 6 de enero de 2018
Coutinho wanted the move by all means; & you can't keep such a player for long/beyond their wish. @LFC is bigger than any player too. Hopefully Klopp signs a top replacement soon.
Liverpool fans saying "Thanks Coutinho for the memories."— Mohamed ElNneny (@ElNnenyM) 6 de enero de 2018
And it's now been 2 hours for me trying to figure out which memories exactly.
