Tuca Ferretti once again says 'no, thank you' to Mexico national team job

Tigres manager Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti once again has said he is not interested in the Mexico national team, confirming he was approached about the latest vacancy but saying he turned down the opportunity.

With Juan Carlos Osorio not returning to the post after the World Cup in order to seek other challenges, attention quickly turned to Ferretti. His Tigres side has been the most consistently successful during the past few years, with four league titles and a Copa MX, but he has said on multiple occasions that managing the national team doesn't interest him.

"There had been mentions of it many times, intents and this ... a person, I'm not going to say the name, approached, but I told him no, thank you. Period," Ferretti said. 

Ferretti also was heralded as the perfect candidate for the job when it last came open, after Miguel Herrera was fired for a physical altercation with a member of the press in 2015 following Mexico's Gold Cup win that summer.

The Tigres boss did take over the national team on an interim basis after then FMF President Decio de Maria asked him to lead the side temporarily. 

During that brief span, Ferretti led Mexico to a win over the United States in the CONCACAF Cup, which earned El Tri a place in the 2017 Confederations Cup. However, Ferretti stepped aside after one more match, with Osorio already waiting in the wings to take over long-term.

"Always. I think that's good, but my decision always has been the same with the exception of when I was there for four matches while Decio was shoring up (the arrival) of Profe Osorio. Now my commitment is to Tigres. I've got three years left on my contract. I've always looked to be good on my word, but yes you do feel thankful, you could say, but once more, thank you."

With the federation failing to convince Osorio to sign a contract extension to remain at the post, and now unable to lure Ferretti away from Tigres, Mexico may again require an interim manager.

Matches against Uruguay and the United States in September are approaching quickly, and the FMF's new president Yon de Luisa wants to take time to get the decision right.

Former Chivas manager Matias Almeyda and Herrera, who currently is coaching Club America, are potential candidates, but someone also could arrive from abroad.
