Singapore can count on Khairul Amri

He has yet to start a game in Singapore’s AFF Suzuki Cup campaign but that will soon change as Fandi Ahmad prepares to start Khairul Amri alongside Ikhsan Fandi.

Singapore will need to go for broke against Timor Leste and record a big win over their opponents to stand a chance of emerging from their group. For Amri the AFF Suzuki Cup holds dear memories for him as besides being a three-time winner of the competition, he famously scored the goal against Thailand which handed the Lions their 2007 AFF Championship crown.

With Shahril Ishak out, the Lions will need Amri to step up and deliver alongside Ikhsan against the Timorese and possibly Thailand. Many lament the fact that the Tampines Rovers forward may not have the legs these days to last the entire 90 minutes but what he lacks in pace, he more than makes up for it with intelligence. After all this is a man who has scored 32 goals in 125 appearances for the Lions.

And while over the years injuries have blighted his career, Amri always makes an impact at the AFF Championship. Against the Timorese tomorrow, you can count on him doing just that because there is a reason why those in the local footballing fraternity call him ‘Mr Suzuki Cup’.
