The Leicester City full-back spent some seven years at Old Trafford after emerging through the club's academy although made just three Premier League appearances.

Simpson subsequently left to join Newcastle United after an initial loan spell back in 2010, before making the move to Leicester in 2014 after a season at QPR.

The 30-year-old would go on to lift the Premier League title with the Foxes, playing a key role in their remarkable 2015-16 campaign that saw them defy all the odds to become champions.

And Simpson was quick to make that point to Carragher who, after an initial back-and-forth between the pair on Twitter, made a joke about the full-back receiving a winners' medal despite hardly playing for United.

Carragher wrote: "Thought you had more [than one title]? You part of those joke players at Man U who claimed titles after 5 games a season?!!"

To which Simpson replied with an image of another former United academy product, midfielder Danny Drinkwater, and the text: "yea, joke man united players holding this beauty."
