Tusker revived their hopes of finishing in top five positions after beating host Nzoia Sugar 2-1 at Sudi Stadium on Saturday.

The win, though insignificant as far as title chase is concerned after Gor Mahia lifted the trophy with a 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars in Kericho, was some sort of consolation to the Brewers, who lost 5-2 to the millers in the first leg.

This was a third straight win for Tusker, who are without suspended coach George Nsimbe. Substitute Patrick Kwitonda gave Nzoia Sugar the lead in the eighth minute, just a few minutes after coming on for the injured Elvis Rupia was forced to pull out of the match.

His replacement, Kwitonda used his mass to navigate past defender, James Situma and Eugene Asike to hit home the host’s opener.

Rupia was forced to play the defensive role with an important save when he denied Humphrey Mieno after clearing the ball on the line early in the opening match before he was ruled out of the match with what looked like a groin injury.

The visitors had to wait until mid second half to level the things up after Noah Wafula took full advantage of Nzoia Sugar defensive mishap to bring Tusker back to the game.

Tusker, however, had the last laugh thanks to a Sydney Ochieng’s well taken free kick late in teh second half.

Tusker won a free-kick through former Sony Sugar’s midfielder, Boniface Muchiri was brought down just outside Nzoia Sugar’s box. Ochieng wasted no chance when he sent his effort straight to the net for the match-winning goal that temporarily took the Brewers second on the log above Sofapaka.
