Ngoma: Poor defending prevented Cape Town City from winning the PSL title

Goal spoke exclusively to the Citizens talisman, who believes their defence prevented them from becoming league champions

Cape Town City winger Aubrey Ngoma is not pleased at how their defence conducted themselves the past season.

“As a team, I think we surprised a lot of teams. They didn’t know how to plan properly for us. Now that they know what to expect, we have to come up with something different and one thing we need to improve on is our defence,” Ngoma told Goal.

The Citizens conceded 35 goals in their 30 Premiership matches, more than any other team in the top five bracket.

Ngoma believes that stoppped them from winning the PSL title.

“We conceded a lot of goals that affected us from becoming league winners. A lot of coaches usually say that strikers win you games, but defenders win you league titles. If we stay solid at the back, I think we have the quality to get us the goals. I think that’s one area that needs a lot of improvement,” Ngoma said.

City will be coached by a new man next season after Eric Tinkler joined SuperSport United this week. The latter’s successor will be named this coming week.

Ngoma is pleased that the former coach backed him for the PSL Player of the Year award, adding that he feels privileged and honoured with such encomium.

“I’m privilege and honoured with such acknowledgements from the coach that coached me in the first season. It’s good to know that you are being recognized for the hard work you have put in. I’m very appreciative of this kind of words, but I think (Lebogang) Manyama has done very well for himself as well. At the end of the day, whoever wins it, I think would have fully deserved it,” Ngoma concluded.
