The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder has joined the MLS Cup champions ahead of the 2018 campaign
Toronto FC has signed Spanish midfielder Ager Aketxe from Athletic Bilbao, sources have confirmed to Goal.
The 24-year-old has joined TFC on a free transfer and signed a two-year deal with the MLS Cup champions, with Athletic possessing a buy-back option.
A former Spain youth international, Aketxe has made just three appearances in La Liga this season. He has appeared in 35 matches in all competitions for Athletic since debuting in 2014.
Aketxe spent the 2016-17 campaign on loan to second-tier side Cadiz, making 18 appearances in the Segunda Division.
Toronto has reloaded this offseason after becoming the first club in MLS history to claim a domestic treble last year, winning the MLS Cup, Supporters' Shield and Canadian Championship.
In addition to Aketxe, the Reds also have added former Netherlands international Gregory van der Wiel and Brazil youth international Auro.
TFC is set to open the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League against the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park before hosting the return leg Feb. 27 at BMO Field.
