Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah grabbed the headlines when Columbus Crew visited New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

The centre-back emerged talk of the match as he netted for either side in a game that ultimately ended 3-2 in favour of The Black and Gold.

His goal for his side, the match opener on the day, was his first of the season, having made 19 appearances involving 18 starts so far.

Mensah got on the score sheet for Crew in the seventh minute when he stabbed the ball into the net from 12 yards after Patrick Mullins nodded down Pedro Santos' free-kick from the far left.

Mullins then made it 2-0 in the 24th minute when he latched on to Harrison Afful's through-ball, raced into the box before firing a low shot beyond goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Seven minutes later, Sean Davis headed a corner into his own net to increase the tally for Crew, before Mensah responded with an own goal of his own at the other end after recess when his attempt to clear a cross ended with the ball in his net.

It was not over for the home side who pulled another goal back in the 69th minute, this time through Samuel Royer, to peg the score at 3-2.

The result has left Crew fourth on the Eastern Conference table, just one place above the Red Bulls.

Aside from Mensah and Afful, two more Ghanaians featured in Saturday's game.

Centre-back Lalas Abubakar joined the action in the 46th minute while youngster Edward Opoku was introduced 20 minutes later.

All four Ghanaians were on the side of The Black and Gold.
