Midfield on Mark Milligan's mind as he eyes Hibernian starting spot

The Socceroos defender is itching for a return to midfield with his new club

While impressing at the back for Australia at the 2018 World Cup and sealing a move to Hibernian in the process, Mark Milligan is hoping to play further up the pitch for his new club.

Making his name as a number six, the 33-year-old has found himself drafted into defence for the Socceroos and was also deployed there for his last club Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

Though happy to make the most of positional versatility, Milligan revealed a return to his favoured number six spot is likely in Scotland

"It's been a good thing and a bad thing throughout my career I guess to be able to play a few different positions," Milligan said in his first Hibs press conference.

"Obviously for the majority of my career I've played at and been known as a six and I think from my understanding that's where I'll be looked at first and foremost.

"I'm just happy to play my role. I can play one or two positions and I'll try to use that to my advantage."

After a career spent entirely in Australia and Asia, Milligan will grace Europe for the first time having previously been denied the chance due to visa issues.

While a lifelong goal, the Socceroos veteran admitted his decision to join Hibs was about far more than just location.

"I've always had that burning ambition to come across," he said.

"I guess the World Cup for me was my body telling me that I still had quite a bit to give.

"After the World Cup I wanted to take my time and make sure I made the right decision, not just for me but for my family. I didn't want to go somewhere just for the sake of going."

Milligan could make his Hibernian debut against Kilmarnock on Saturday with the club looking to claim its second win of the season.
