Obafemi Martins outshines Gervinho in five-goal thriller

Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins and Ivory Coast winger, Gervinho were on target as Shanghai Shenhua produced a stunning display to hand Hebei CFFC a 3-2 defeat in a Chinese Super League encounter on Saturday.

Gervinho had given Manuel Pellegrini’s side a perfect start after netting four minutes into the tie. A Xuesheng Dong strike, before the half hour mark, saw the visitors double their lead.

But Gus Poyet’s men rallied back within 17 minutes in the second half.

Giovanni Moreno pulled one back on the stroke of the hour mark, before registering his brace, thus levelling the scoreline, in the 76th minute.

Hebei were yet to settle before Super Eagles striker, Martins ensured they completed an epic fight back after hitting the winner a minute after their equaliser.

While the former Inter Milan man was afforded the entire duration of the thrilling clash, his Ivorian counterpart was unable to help his side steady the ship as he was taken off before the restart.

The winning strike has taken Martins’ tally to seven in nine league matches this season, while Gervinho just opened his account after four appearances this campaign.

Shanghai are ninth in the Chinese topflight log after garnering 23 points from 18 games while their visitors are seventh with 29 points from 19 encounters.
