The Celtic striker has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, and a man already with the Blues considers the youngster to be a top talent

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante believes a call-up to the France senior squad for Celtic striker Moussa Dembele would be “fully deserved”.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a standout debut campaign with the Scottish champions, with three hat-tricks forming part of his 29-goal haul.

Those efforts have helped to raise his profile and spark talk of interest from some of Europe’s leading clubs.

A switch to Premier League table-toppers Chelsea was widely discussed during the January transfer window, with Dembele fanning the flames with a deadline day visit to a medical centre in London.

He was to stay put, but the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid are also said to be closely monitoring his development.

Kante, who could be a future team-mate at Stamford Bridge, is among those to have been impressed by Dembele’s performances this season and considers him to be ready for another step up in class.

He commented on reports suggesting that the Celtic forward could be named in Didier Deschamps’ next France squad, telling The Sun: “If Dembele is called up, it will be fully deserved.

“You do not score the amount of goals that he has scored this season and it goes unnoticed.

“He has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe this season.

“He must be playing with so much confidence and that is always one of the most important things for a striker.

“The coach picks on form. I don’t think the fact he isn’t playing for what people might consider one of the elite European clubs will be held against him.

“The coach gave me a chance when I was at Leicester and Dimitri Payet a chance when he was at West Ham.

“I do not think that is a worry. He’s scoring a lot of goals and playing well - that’s all that matters.”

Dembele has represented France at every youth level from U16 to U21, with four goals netted in as many appearances for Les Bleuets.

It could be that a first full cap arrives in the spring, with Deschamps’ side next in action on March 25 against Luxembourg in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.
