Muang Thong United - Johor Darul Tazim | ACL 2016
When Johor Darul Ta'zim meet Muangthong United tomorrow, it won't be the first time that they have played each other in the ACL preliminary round.

JDT goes head to head against 2016 Thai League 1 champions Muangthong United on Tuesday to find out who will advance to the next stage of the 2018 AFC Champions League qualifier to face Japan's Kashiwa Reysol.

However, this won't be the first time that both teams will face each other at the same stage of the competition, having done so previously in 2016. And it was the Thai club who emerged as the victors on that day.

In 2016, Muangthong was already coached by Totchtawan Sripan who will also take charge of this year's match and he had in his starting line-up the likes of Chanatip Songkrasin, Kawin Thamsatchanan, Peerapat Notchaiya and Cleiton Silva.

While in the XI that former JDT head coach Mario Gomez began with, 10 players are still with the current team with Azinee Taib being the only exception. Returning this season, Jorge Pereyra Diaz was also in the team that played at SCG Stadium two years ago.

It was a fairly even contest with both sides creating chances to win the match in normal and extra time. Comparatively, Farizal Marlias was given a much sterner test and came out with flying colours to deny the Thai side.

The match went into penalty shoot-out and it was there that Kawin became the hero for Muangthong. It's not uncommon for teams to miss three spot kicks but Kawin's brilliance ensured that JDT finished the match without hitting the back of the net despite having three chances at the spot kick.

Kawin saved from the foreign trio of Diaz, Marcos Antonio and Hariss Harun while Cleiton, Peerapat and Sarach Yooyen converted for the home side.

Muangthong were eventually knocked out of the competition when they lost to Shanghai SIPG in the next stage of the competition that year.
