'It's been a rollercoaster ride' - Gundogan feels anything still possible for Man City

They were unable to maintain that pace, though, and have seen mid-season wobbles undermine their pursuit of the English top-flight crown.

A run of three successive victories has, however, lifted them back into second spot and to within eight points of table-topping Chelsea.

Gundogan will play no part in their efforts to bridge that gap after suffering a serious knee injury, but he believes major silverware is still there to be shot at.

The Germany international told Eurosport: "Eight points behind Chelsea seems difficult to catch up, but in England everything is possible.

Season could be over for Gabriel Jesus

"The entire season feels like a rollercoaster ride. We started very well, almost record-breaking. Then followed a low.

"In the past games, we have grown again, although we have not always played well."

While remaining an interested spectator of City’s endeavours, Gundogan acknowledges that his main focus at present is on returning to full fitness.

He added: "Before the season had really started for me, it was already over again. That was terribly disappointing.

"I know I have to work really hard on my comeback.

Man City's new defensive addition

"Intensive work and pain are part of everyday life."

Gundogan had made 17 appearances for City in all competitions before seeing his debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium cut short in December.
