Delhi Dynamos have roped in former Barcelona youth coach Josep Gombau as their head coach for the upcoming season of the Indian Super League (ISL). The club has announced that Gombau has signed a two-year contract.
The Spaniard was last in charge of A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers where he was let go after the club failed to qualify for the 17-18 Finals Series. He has, however, won silverware with Adelaide United and Hong Kong's Kitchee SC.
Interestingly, Gombau was shortlisted by two other ISL clubs for the upcoming season but could not get the league's approval, leading them to hire other candidates. As a result, Delhi had to seek a 'no-objection' with the two clubs in question before getting clearance from ISL.
The 42-year-old started out his coaching career in Spain with Catalonian club Amposta before becoming a youth coach at Espanyol and subsequently Barcelona.
He is known for favouring a possession-based system and will now look to implement it at the Dynamos as they seek to improve upon their eighth-placed finish under Miguel Angel Portugal last season.
