Having not seen the pitch for his new club before Wednesday's Champions League clash, the Mexico star gave Diego Simeone plenty to think about

Life at Atletico Madrid was not off to the best start for Hector Herrera.

Having skipped out on this summer's Gold Cup to focus on his impending move to the Spanish giant, the Mexico international had yet to make his breakthrough for Diego Simeone's rebuilt club.

Four league matches had come and gone, and Herrera had not seen so much as a minute of action for his new side.

That all changed on Wednesday in spectacular fashion.

Having once again started the match on the bench, Herrera finally got his first taste of action with Atletico. His club had gone 2-0 down to Juventus, the Italians taking the lead through Juan Cuadrado's wonder-strike before a Blaise Matuidi header doubled the Serie A side's advantage in the 65th.

Herrera was still watching on though, as Atleti pulled one back through Stefan Savic, setting up a dramatic finish to the Champions League group stage opener for both side.

The El Tri midfielder was brought on in the 76th as his club looked to claw back into the contest, replacing Thomas Partey , but it took until the dying minutes for Herrera to produce the goal his side were so desperately searching for.

A corner in the 90th minute saw Herrera rise highest to nod home, rounding off a comeback and helping secure a 2-2 draw for Atletico Madrid on a night when it seemed as though the Spanish side was is real danger of falling at home.

The goal could provide just the kickstart Herrera needed to get his Atletico stint up and running.

Herrera became the second notable Mexico international to score a debut goal in the last two days, though Edson Alvarez's debut was in the Champions League, rather than for his new club Ajax

While Herrera has struggled for minutes, Alvarez has grown into a starting role with the Dutch side early on in his tenure with the club, and got his first goal in Europe's top competition with a slick finish in a 3-0 beating of French club Lille.
