The Black Stars captain has hit back following criticism from the former Hearts of Oak defender

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has slammed former Hearts of Oak captain Yaw Amankwah Mireku following his comments on the Black Stars performance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

The former full-back, who led the Phobians to clinch the 2000 Caf Champions League, wants Gyan to be stripped of the national team’s captaincy ‘due to bad leadership that has dented the image of the national team.’

The 40-year-old also called on West Ham United star Andre Ayew to be confirmed as the next captain to lead the new generation of players.

"I expect legends to talk about me on issues concerning the national team not people like him," Gyan hit back, speaking to Angel FM.

“Who knows Amankwah Mireku? He is nowhere near my level of achievements in football. At times, some of these people try to use me in order to gain attention from the public," he added.

Ghana have reached the semi-finals of the Afcon six times in a row, winning their last title way back in 1982.

Gyan remains the team’s all-time topscorer with 49 goals in 101 games since making his debut in 2003 against Somalia.
