Ghana receive boost as Gyan returns to training

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan returned to training on Saturday after picking up a thigh injury against Egypt in Group D’s last game of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old was initially feared to miss the quarterfinal against DR Congo on Sunday.

However, tests ran on him on Thursday revealed the injury wasn't serious as reported and was able to join his teammates in the final training session.

The Black Stars all-time topscorer initially did ball works with physical trainer Jamie Lawrence before he was asked to join the rest of the group.

Although Gyan scored the only goal against Mali to ensure Ghana's qualification to the last eight, it took him 587 days to find the back of the net for the Black Stars, as he endured a miserable run in 2016 due to injuries.

He would hope to get 2017 off to a more convincing start should he be declared fit to feature against DR Congo as he eyes his 50th goal for Ghana and 100 caps since making his debut against Somalia in 2003.

A win for the Black Stars will see them qualifying to the semi-finals for a record six consecutive time, in search for their first trophy since 1982.
