The Ghana star unveiled an astro-turf pitch he funded at his alma mater in Accra on Tuesday

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has officially unveiled an astro-turf pitch he funded as a gift to his former school Accra Academy on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old, who recently signed a two-year contract with Turkish side Kayserispor, is reported to have spent around $200,000 to complete the project he started in 2015.

Gyan graduated from Accra Academy in 2002, where he was part of the school's football team which was then coached by former Hearts of Oak and Aduana Stars manager J.E Sarpong.

"Asamoah Gyan has done well and must be commended for his efforts to help the school," Sarpong told Goal.

"I am hoping that other players will be able to take a leaf from his efforts and do same for their former schools so that we all can help promote football in the country. If we have at least five of this pitches across the country, several players will be nurtured and it will help the national team in the long run," he added.

Gyan is expected to join his new teammates in Turkey for the pre-season tour next week. He is Ghana's all-time topscorer with 51 goals in 105 appearances.
