The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced that Bloemfontein Celtic coach Steve Komphela and defender Alfred Ndengane have won the Coach and Player of the Month Awards for the month of August.

Komphela has instilled a winning mentality at Siwelele this season as they remain unbeaten in the top flight.

Under the former Kaizer Chiefs boss, Celtic have managed to bag three wins and a single draw as the duo became the first recipients of the PSL monthly accolades.

In announcing the awards, the PSL released a statement on Monday as Komphela led his troops to the top of the table with 13 points from six matches.

“Komphela, installed as the new Siwelele coach during pre-season, went undefeated in the month of August, impressively guiding his side to three victories and a draw in the Absa Premiership,” the PSL said in a statement.

“In the process, Bloemfontein Celtic hit the back of the net on seven occasions, only conceding twice, in the match against his former club, Kaizer Chiefs. During August, Celtic beat Chippa United, Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates, scoring five unanswered goals in the process,” the statement continued.

The ex-Free State Stars mentor competed against Bidvest Wits’ coach Gavin Hunt and SuperSport United’s Kaitano Tembo whilst the recipients were selected by a panel of analysts, former players and broadcast media.

On the other hand, Ndengane has been a reliable member of the squad so far where he has led Celtic with his organisational skills and impressive displays which has helped his side boast the best defensive record in the PSL so far.

Through the lanky defender's contribution, Phunya Sele Sele have kept clean sheets in their opening three games.

“For winning the awards, Komphela and Ndengane will each receive R5 000 from Absa. As proud sponsors of the Absa Premiership, Absa congratulates both the coach and player on winning their respective accolades and looks forward to more entertaining soccer in the remaining league action for the month of September,” concluded the statement from the PSL.

Meanwhile, Celtic will have a week-long break and will take on the struggling Maritzburg United on Sunday, September 23 at home in the league.
