Atlanta United sets record for largest crowd in U.S. Open Cup history

Atlanta United continues to set record and shattered another one on Wednesday. 

Having already set MLS attendance records for both single-game and single-season, the Five Stripes drew 41,012 fans for a U.S. Open Cup round of 16 clash against the Chicago Fire. 

That number tops the previous USOC record, held by the Seattle Sounders who pulled in 35,615 fans for the 2011 final at CenturyLink Field. 

Atlanta pulled in 48,200 fans on average in their first season in Major League Soccer, good for the top mark in league history.

The club also packed 72,035 fans into Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the 2018 home opener, a single-game record for MLS. 

Unfortunately for the supporters, the record crowd could not lift the club to victory on Wednesday.  

A goal from Nemanja Nikolic was enough to see the Fire move on to the quarterfinals of the competition with a 1-0 win. 

Atlanta still leads the MLS Eastern Conference, having picked up 33 points from 16 matches. 

The Five Stripes return to action Sunday against the Portland Timbers in MLS action.
