The lower league side official believes that the current season is the right time for them to end their romance with the National League

Abia Comets’ Hyacinth Ezindu has boasted that the lower league side' chances of playing in the top flight are brighter with their mid-season friendly results with Abia Warriors and Rivers United.

Abia Warriors needed a late penalty kick to salvage a point against the Nigeria National League outfit while Rivers United were unable to beat nor score against them in two games played in Port Harcourt and Umuahia recently also.

The team had defeated the Pride of Rivers 2-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday before settling for a goalless draw in the return leg tie played at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Umuahia this past Wednesday.

Ezindu who is the club secretary disclosed that they are confident of finishing the season strongly in the lower league as they aspire to have their debut in the Nigeria Professional Football League next season.

“We have shown through the recent games we have played that we are ready for the remainder of the league season and our target is to secure a ticket to the premier league,” Ezindu told Goal.

“We are not boastful over nothing. We have worked very hard and the results we have posted against Abia Warriors and Rivers United didn’t come by accident. We have been very thorough with our recruitment drive.

“The players we have brought in during the mid-season transfer have really blended with the rest of their teammates and we are getting the result in the games we have played. We know results recorded during friendlies are no enough yardstick but we can use it to gauge how the future will look like.

“Our mission is to swell the number of Abia teams in the top flight to three at the end of the season. We have worked towards it and I believe it is possible. Enyimba and Abia Warriors have given us good representation and it will be nice we add ours too.”
