Schalke's Matip allowed to play against Twente as appeal decision delayed

Schalke's Joel Matip will be allowed to play the club's Europa League last-16 decider against Twente after Uefa delayed its decision on an appeal from the German club over the defender's red card in the first leg in the Netherlands.

Television replays suggested that Matip made no contact with Twente striker Luuk de Jong, who went down in the penalty box and converted the subsequent spot-kick to give Twente a 1-0 win last week.

While Uefa's disciplinary committee rejected an initial protest by Schalke against Matip's sending-off, it has now postponed a decision on any suspension following a second appeal from the German club.

A statement on Schalke's club website said a decision on the case will be announced on Friday, allowing Matip to play the second leg against Twente on Thursday.

The game at the Veltins-Arena kicks-off at 21.05CET.
