Championship Preview: Leicester look to extend lead at the top

Championship leaders Leicester City will be seeking a fourth consecutive victory when they travel to managerless Millwall on New Year's Day.

Nigel Pearson's men extended their advantage at the top to four points with a 5-3 home victory over Bolton Wanderers on Sunday - Lloyd Dyer and Gary Taylor-Fletcher netting after the interval with the sides having shared six first-half goals.

And Leicester will be especially keen to maintain their advantage given that their closest challengers are East Midlands rivals Derby County, who are unbeaten in nine with eight wins to show from that run.

Derby cannot climb to the summit on Wednesday, but three points at home to Wigan would provide a boost to their bid for promotion.

Steve McClaren's men will be full of confidence heading into that clash too, having won 2-1 at Barnsley on Sunday and with a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture on December 1 still fresh in their minds.

Third-placed Burnley, who have gone off the boil since their blistering start to the season, will be aiming for just their third win in 11 fixtures when Huddersfield Town come to Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche's charges sit level on points with Derby, but will need to tread carefully, with Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest waiting to pounce on any further slip-ups.

The Rs have wasted two chances to do just that in the past week, failing to win their last three matches, but a home clash with struggling Doncaster Rovers provides them with a good opportunity to get their form back on track.

Forest, meanwhile, are unbeaten in six and begin 2014 at Reading, who have lost three in a row.

Ipswich Town climbed into the play-off positions with a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Sunday and will feel confident of staying there with a positive result against a Charlton Athletic side who have just one win from seven.

At the other end of the table, bottom clubs Barnsley and Yeovil Town face tricky trips to Birmingham City and Watford respectively, while Sheffield Wednesday welcome Blackpool to Hillsborough.

Elsewhere, Leeds United play Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road, Brighton and Hove Albion meet Bournemouth and Bolton Wanderers host Middlesbrough.
