Santosh Trophy Round-up: Goa held by Punjab, Tamil Nadu defeated

In a cracking game at the Santosh Trophy, an injury-time winner won all points for Railways against the southern state...

In a high profile played on Tuesday, Goa could manage a draw against Punjab at the Kachenjunga Stadium, Siliguri in their first of the final round games of the Santosh Trophy.

It was the Goans who took the lead when Lavino Fernandes dribbled past a few players to set it up for Steven Fernandes who applied the finishing touch.

Steven could have doubled the lead before the half hour mark but a brilliant save by the Punjab custodian denied them.

Substitute Ranjit Singh was brought in by Punjab who was a constant menace for the Goan defenders. Reagan Juliao made a few top saves to keep his side’s lead intact but the tall striker eventually had a say by scoring in the injury time. Meldon D’Silva chested the ball which fell at the feet of Singh who slotted home with ease.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu were beaten by Railways 2-1 with PC Raju and Shiva Narjirary being the goalscorers for the latter. Anand Raj’s strike for the southern state could only reduce the margin of defeat.
