A legend in the regional footballing circles, Fandi shone early in his career with Dutch side FC Groningen with his goal in the UEFA Cup over Internazionale. He then continued a glittering playing career in the region representing Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean clubs before going on with a coaching career.
Fandi's wax figure dons the Singapore Lion’s 1994 jersey, recreated by Madame Tussauds, and captures a historic moment for both the national hero as well as for the country.
"I'm very honoured to be part of Madame Tussaud's." said Fandi at the unveiling at ITE Central. "I think its the greatest honour for any athlete in Singapore. I'm not here because I want to be here, but definitely its because of the voting from the people. I thank the people of Singapore, the fans who havs been supporting me throughout my entire life and my entire football career."
Singapore won the 1994 Malaysia cup with Fandi as captain, the last time before the nation exited the tournament due to political preassure. Fandi emerged with the last goal in the final, was voted Player of the Season and awarded a state medal, the Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (Public Service Medal), awarded to persons who has rendered commendable public service in Singapore for their achievements.
"I've got alot of good memories from that period. I remember scoring alot of goals, the bicycle and scissors kick goals, which were memorable to me. I enjoyed playing at the 1980 Malaysia Cup final when I was only 18. But the best memory has to be the 1994 final, our last Malaysia Cup win. I remember Abbas Saad getting a hat-trick before I scored our final goal using my left foot."
Fandi continued, “Looking at my wax figure is very exciting for me as it makes me relive that unforgettable moment in my career. I am glad to be able to play my part in developing and building Singapore’s football scene and will continue to do so. I want the younger generation to know that with passion and hard work, we can achieve our dreams!”
Lily Lim, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Singapore said: “Fandi Ahmad is featured as he is a national legend and icon in Singapore’s football history. We believe that his fans will be thrilled to see him at our attraction amongst the world’s greatest sports stars!”
In addition to Fandi Ahmad, other celebrities confirmed to feature in the attraction include Stefanie Sun, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé, David Beckham, Michelle Yeoh and Lady Gaga.
