'Singapore's football market is predominantly about the Premier League' - Former England international and Manchester United defender Paul Parker

Parker will be in action later this year in the EPL Masters Football Cup together with other EPL stars and Malaysia Cup legends like Fandi Ahmad and Abbas Saad
The EPL Masters Football Cup is set to make its debut at the Singapore Indoor stadium on October 14, 2012 featuring former stars from clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, an EPL All-Stars and a Singapore team.

The Singapore Legends team will be made up of Singapore’s own footballing son, Fandi Ahmad, who will be teaming up with old teammates such as Abbas Saad and David Lee from the legendary Malaysia Cup winning squad of 1994.

Former Manchester United and England international Paul Parker spoke exclusively to Goal.com Singapore on the inaugural competition in Singapore and what it means for fans of the Premier League.

“Fans here love big names players and not everyone here is able to see them," said the former Manchester United player.

"The real football fans in Singapore rarely get to meet such players compared to the corporate sponsors. There are many heartlanders who can’t afford to see them in action. This is where the EPL Masters is different and unique.

“What the EPL Masters does is, it brings the ex-players here and we are open to everybody. There will be fringe events where the public can come and meet us. This is not your typical high glamour event where there are lots of restrictions in meeting up with the players.”

Parker also listed the reasons why fans should come and watch the former players in action and why there will be more bigger name players making their way down to the Lion City for the Masters.

“Singapore's football market is predominantly about the Premier League and the local league here itself is not very strong and well supported because everyone is watching the Premier League or the other Europeans league,” said the Singapore resident.

“You will get more big names in Singapore compared to when we played in the other country as it is a destination which is easy to fly to and also has one of the best airport in the world. That is the reason why players like it when events are being held in Singapore.

“It brings the older fans together to watch former players in action. They grew up watching us in action and now they get to meet us up close and ask any question that they have.

“You won’t get the players running around like they do when they are younger but you will see them playing more with their brains. So do come down and meet and watch us in action in the EPL Masters Singapore Cup.”
