Martinez planning to strengthen Wigan squad with January shopping spree

The Latics have been hampered by a string of injuries this season and their Spanish manager is determined to add more depth to his ravaged squad by bringing in several new faces

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is gearing up for a busy transfer window as he looks to bolster his small and injury-hit squad.

The Spanish boss has already secured a deal for Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza, who will join up with the Latics in January, but is looking for further reinforcements.

“We are having a few difficulties, especially with injuries, so we have to find a solution,” Martinez told reporters.

“We need to make it difficult to get into our starting 11.

“So we want to do some business in January. I think it’s important that every transfer window works in your favour and you finish with a stronger squad.

“But I still feel our most important players are already in the squad – they are just injured.”

The Latics have lost five of their last seven Premier League matches and have dropped into the relegation zone despite a promising start to the campaign.

“Our start to the season was the best we have had in the four years that I have been in charge,” Martinez added.

“But we have not got the points we should have done since then and that is something we have to put right.”
