West Brom boss Clarke rubbishes claims Lukaku will join Swansea next season

The Baggies boss has labelled reports linking the Chelsea loanee with a permanent switch to the Capital One Cup winners as "idle gossip", and does not expect him to move to Wales
West Brom manager Steve Clarke has dismissed speculation that on-loan striker Romelu Lukaku could move to Swansea next season on a permanent deal.

The Belgian youngster has starred for the Baggies this season, leading the club’s scoring charts with 13 league goals in 29 appearances and earning a PFA Young Player of the Year nomination.

However, it had been reported that the Capital One Cup holders had stolen the march on West Brom in the race to sign the 19-year-old, who is currently on loan at the Hawthorns from Chelsea.

But Clarke has rubbished rumours that Lukaku could be attracted to the prospect of playing in the Europa League with Swansea, and does not believe he will move to the Liberty Stadium.

“It is idle gossip – it’s lazy,” Clarke told reporters.

“I read in the press he’s going to Swansea – but I would be very surprised if he ends up there.”

The Scottish boss admits there has been interest in his players, who have thrived this year and look set to finish in the top half of the table, but West Brom are determined to keep hold of their star players.

“We’re not concerned about losing players,” Clarke continued.

“It’s a compliment. It means we’ve had a good season. But if anyone comes for our players they will have to pay a lot of money.”
