Manchester United-Tottenham Betting Preview: Back the entertainment to start early at Old Trafford

Manchester United will be hoping to continue their resurgent form when they welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford on New Year’s Day.

After losing consecutive home games against Everton and Newcastle at the beginning of December, David Moyes’ men have bounced back to win six consecutive games in all competitions, and are 3/4 (1.75) favourites with Paddy Power to record another victory in this one.

Meanwhile, Tim Sherwood has collected seven points from a possible nine since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas and is available at 15/4 (4.75) to pull off a shock win in this one.

The last two meetings between these sides have resulted in draws, and you can get odds of 11/4 (3.75) on them cancelling each other out once again.

While the 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool may have represented the final straw for Villas-Boas, his side’s uninspiring goal-scoring form had already seen patience run thin at White Hart Lane.

A paltry record of only 15 goals scored in 15 Premier League games played a decisive role in the Portuguese manager’s dismissal, and his successor has already set out to give the team a more attacking edge.

Having brought Emmanuel Adebayor back into the fold to play alongside Roberto Soldado, Sherwood has been rewarded with a return of seven goals in three league matches, although sacrificing an extra midfielder has inevitably left the defence more exposed.

This more adventurous approach should lead to an open game against United, who have found their feet in front of goal recently with 12 strikes in their last five matches and should be able to welcome Wayne Rooney back after injury ruled him out of the 1-0 win over Norwich.

With 18 goals scored in the last five, encounters between these teams are usually particularly entertaining, and it shouldn’t take too long for the goalmouth action to unfold in this one considering Spurs’ offensive outlook.

With this in mind, odds of 6/4 (2.50) are not to be missed on over 1.5 first-half goals being scored, in a bet that would have paid out in two of Tottenham’s last three games and three of United’s last five.
